Or find someone to make one for you. But expect to pay accordingly. How bad do you want one??? I am a collector, not a modeller: I try to grab all that I can afford . For brass locomotives, that means one in four/five years. Had Alco PA1 popped-up instead of the Krauss-Maffei, I would have bought it undoubtedly. Anyway, friendly people at AZL made it clear that if there is enough interest in a project, they will consider it. So, I am just lobbying in favor of a new run of Alco PA1, which would go well with the soon coming lightweight cars Oh I certainly understand! Enough sweaky wheels and maybe the grease will follow. In my case, a dream for an FL9 New Haven seems impossible in my lifetime at least. Gerd is my best best and his work is brilliant.

So, let's evaluate an approximative price (without obligation) : how much for a ready-to-run PA1 (Hallmark shell, painted be Gerd, say in ... NH colours, and motorized chassis ! ) cost ?

Another problem : despite of the fact that Gerd is initially a German name, I suppose that "Your" Gerd is living in the States ; and Murphy says that we "poor" Europeans should not forget the customs (about 30 % ? )

Then you might want to try Frank in de Nederland: www.frank-zscale.com/ or www.facebook.com/Zspoor/Some thoughts about the Hallmark ornaments. It's important to remember that they are representations of Lionel O scale rolling stock from the 1950s and 1960s. Certain liberties were taken for them to run on the Lionel fixed radius (21" as I recall) track and turnouts. So don't expect prototype accuracy. One could probably do better with a 3D scan of an N scale PA-1, shrink the data and print a Z scale shell. There is no readily available Z scale 6 axle chassis that fits a PA, but the ES44 is the closest with the prototype wheelbase being about 4 feet (5mm scale) longer than the PA. Personally I'd be interested in an SP A-B-A set of -1s in Daylight colors and an A-B set in the bloody nose. Mark

One thing with Gerd is the trust factor-he is trustworthy. Takes time to ship it, he does a great job, and he delivers what he promises.
Believe me, trust is the most important factor here. Being screwed out of a few painted shells "promised", and the money lost, it's worth it to someone you can count on to deliver.

Thanks for the link and discussion on the Hallmark PA1 ornament. I had heard about these various places, but was never sure which ones were close to correct for Z scale.
So I ordered on of these - price sure is reasonable. I was pleased to see the detail look pretty good, but was surprised by the weight - guess I was assuming plastic injection molding.
So now that I have it, anyone have tips on how to turn an ornament into a shell? I could just grab the Dremel and start cutting - its cheap enough if I botch the job I am not out much - but if anyone has done this, and insights would be appreciated.
Thanks, Nick

I think this is a very good request, Nick, May be Gerd is willing to tell you more how he does it. Gerd? I got all my Alco Pa-1 and -2 from him. He can even do the Alco Pa-Bs on the basis of two Hallmarks....... Best, Sven

O.K.,just some hints, not giving everything away, because that has backfired several times in the past... I basically use a MTL GP chassis and add the Hallmark side frames. In the past I added dummy wheels at the front and rear to make it C-C, but the wheels caused trouble with de-railing, therefore I leave them empty, function first.
