You could make them out of styrene sheet with a small punch and small styrene strips. Doesn't the type of hatch depend of the type of load?

That is realy cool David! Thank you for sharing. I'll guess eventually the speakers remain the problem in Z scale.

Thank you for the complement, patience is the most important skill. Styrene is a great material to build scale models. Just start with simple buildings, eventually one can build a simple gondola or caboose body.

It is less expensive if you start scratch building in styrene... I was eventually able to build mine from styrene, used only handtools and Dremmel drill. Chopping the chassis (per David Karp's demonstrated idea) was the biggest challenge. ...which still keeps me from building an other one. /Frank

See the fun of magnematic couplers. I have uploaded this film to youtube 6 years ago. These type of couplers is a must for who ever will make a Z scale switcher, in my opinion.

.... Not all couplers are in working order from the factory. I had simmilar experience with some MTL couplers. Cutting one or two windings from the spring in the coupler pocket helps. I use a 16V~ transformer and Kadee electromagnetical uncouplers. /Frank

Hi Dom, Unfortunately I did not keep accurate record of the sizes and measuring on the finished model is difficult. the finished interface is glued in place with CA or epoxy. The pin is to reinforce the construction. Size is approximately 4.7x1x7 mm one hole is done with the MTL tap and drill set for MTL couplers, other one approximately 1mm for the pin. I drilled a hole in the body for the 1mm pin. Depending where the threaded hole ends under the body you might need to drill an other hole since might come through the brass strip. /Frank

Decals

I draw my decals in open office draw to real size and export to an uncompressed PDF. Tutorials how to use open office draw are in the internet. ...it is time consuming. With a simple BW ink jet printer you can print them on decal paper in black. If you have a steady hand you can fill collour with a microbrush or sharp toothpick. After paint has dried you can apply the same decal again to clean up the contours. If you need white decals you can do the same, only find a copy service who has a Oki laser printer which can print white (they replace the black drum for a white drum, as I understood). The black pdf wil be printed white. Colour laser primnts will only work for larger size and surface should be white to get the right colour. Next image shows my scratchbuild caboose, where I have used the layerd decals with hand painted blue and white in the D&RGW logo. Same for the white numbers whiche are painted on, afterwards the black decal with transperant numbers is applied. So you can do a lot yourself already. But need to work with a drawing program which can generate the print files which have enough detail. Also you have to experiment with drawings (changing line thickness etc..) until the right result is printed. Further more, if the result looks good as seen from one foot distance, you might be ok in my opinion.

Dom,
901 and 902 require a Märklin coupler box, since these are designed to convert Märklin rollingstock to MTL couplers. So, installing 901 or 902 will be more difficult. In my opinion 905 works best. /Frank
