MTL springs can be replaced by wires. And if you run just DC, you can bend the motor contacts to the chassis. Thats how my SW1000 runs without any circuit board. Furthermore, I thought Gerd did put MTL GP35 shells over an AZL GP30 chasis.

It is getting a little bit off topic but, only a switcher from MTL would make sense, unless it is easy to upgrade to MTL magne-matic couplers.

If you use the MTL couplers for magnetic uncoupling (which is reason for me to convert most rolling stock to MTL couplers), truck mounted couplers have the advantage that they also uncouple on curved track. Body mounts require straight track for uncoupling. :-)

....... Wonder how far off paint color match on yellow is between two different manufacturers? Even in the real world the same color of rolling stock differs over years because of wethering. So, some weathering of the scale models helps out. /Frank

Indeed per prototype, where possible. But don't forget our 'modelers licence' to scale down the real world and its history to our modeling needs.

What do you think? Best, Sven Hi Sven, That is another nice exibition layout plan to watch trains when ready! I would connect the staging yard with a Y to the layout. It will give you also the possibility to change direction of the locomotives for trains in the station area. /Frank

I found a couple which comes close, but the body style is just slightly different :-). ...But I'll guess that can be fixed by any kitbasher. link to Railroad pictures archives

Hi, just saw this short Amtrak train on RailPictures.Net. Ideal for the small layout link to RailPictures.Net

So it locks like the poll is pretty much done, so a switcher it is: SW1500 in front of NW2. New territory for AZL or better their supplier, not just a cut and paste job, new new smaller trucks, circuit board fitting the cab, lights, maybe new drive mechanism. The challenge is on! Yes indeed a challenge, but Märklin could make a V100 (small trucks) so a SW1500 or NW2 shouldn't be a problem either. Maybe worms must be attached directly to the motor axis. Further customer requirements: Don't use traction tyres for a switcher, for better power pickup at low speed. Nice to have: A metal shell as Märklin uses would positively improve traction power. I suggest that small SMD led's are used for lights, embedded in the shell. The shell should have contacts, so the shell remains removable for maintenance. Similar approach as Märklin. A small PCB with contacts could fit in the cab. Might require optional factory installed DCC. Possibility to attach MTL couplers. See some ideas I have used: ...but the biggest challange will be a cost effecient design that meets the Z community requirements.

Alco RS3 would also be nice. You might be able to reuse the GP7/GP30 chassis slightly modified.

We need a yard switcher, and the coupler box replaceable with MTL 905. I second that! It could look similar to this SW1000 (all what you see here is scratchbuild...):
