So, what are the first impressions by lucky owners of this brass locomotive? How does it compare to older AZL diesel brass engines? :-)

Yes, please let us know if there is a list for preorder. Locomotives to be made are 600, 604, 607, 610 and 611 604 and 610 are only available with passenger cars (a set of 5 coaches, 1 diner, and 1 round end observation car) 611 is available as a stand alone locomotive, or with a set of passenger cars (unique road numbers on the passenger cars packaged with the 611) All passenger cars are painted in the Powhatan Arrow livery. Send Rob Kluz an email ztrack@aol.com to be put on the list. We will have more updates on the proper reservation process later, but an email will keep your place in line for now. And thanks for the support! Hello. I have being saving for the BIG N&W J project since my reservation by e-mail was acknowledged, on August 2017 . Since this is an important venture, with many sponsors on my side (wife, friends, relatives etc.) I would like to know what are the next steps in the reservation process. At a certain point, shall I send some money to secure my reservation? Will the sale be completed through AZL Direct online store? Excuse me if mine are stupid questions, but this is the first time I pre-order anything. Furthermore, I am so excited about the new locomotive that I cannot wait for updates

So, in the end it seems that, but for Erie Lackawanna, very few railway companies put E8s in the lead of freigth trains. Funny thing, almost ALL railways put F3s and F7s to lead passenger trains :-P
Fast passenger locomotives couldn't pull freight cars, but slower freight locomotives could pull passenger trains. No wonder travel-by-train concept died a long time ago in the USA ah ah ah

I am wondering if E8A locomotives ever saw freight service. I would like to combine some AZL locomotives with matching (non passenger) cars.
I searched for pictures on Railpicture.net, but unfortunately I could find Erie Lackawanna's only. There is a single picture of a NYC Central E8A pulling a freight convoy, but author is not certain it is actually an E8A.
Any advice?

Next month I will be in NYC for a few days!
Is there any recommended spot for fine trainspotting in town? I am interested in freight trains, as I find US contemporary passenger trains quite dull :-P

It seems a lot of vintage brass AZL ended up in the UK . Quite often some loco or another is popping up for sale (alas, at expensive prices )

What about first generation SD-40s by MTL? I understand they featured a Maxon motor, whose quality was comparable to Faulhaber's. Does anyone own one of those locos?

As I am a "static" collector and not a rail modeller, out of curiosity: what happens if three AZL locomotives are put in lead of a convoy? I see WP typical consist for the Zephyr was F3ABB. I mean: as the three locos are all powered, will there be any impact on the overall train speed?

Long time no see of a picture from a Big Boy. Is there anybody out there still using one? Best, Sven Here comes Dirk's answer: All these pictures are stunning! Thank you very much for sharing. Brass steam engines by AZL are truly awesome. I am sure many people would hardly believe it is Z scale I cannot wait to see the coming J-class!!!

If I may, what is there behind the decision to produce -in brass- such particular a locomotive? Perhaps a sentimental reason? I am not an expert of US models, but it seems to me the Krauss-Maffei is very unlike previously released AZL brass locomotives (GS-4, Alco PA1, EMD E8, Big Boy, Challenger etc., all of which were very common/popular at their times)

If you are referring to the MTL GP shells, not hard at all. The instructions that come with the loco. Basically you insert 2 toothpicks into slots between the forward truck to release the catches and pull. Mark That’s great! Thank you, Mark

Out of curiosity: is it difficult to remove the shell of the loco in object? I am asking because I noticed there are several very beautiful weathered shells for sale :-)

The AZL direct price is $999. If I am not mistaken, pre-orders already amounted to the overall production run, did they not? Anyway, given the average price of 2nd hand brass locos on the after-market, 1k bucks for a brand new one still sounds as a fair price to me. Brass is the new gold
