This locomotives deserves its own thread! Here is post 1
Tunnel Motors as they are called were developed for the SP and Rio Grande railroads. Both railroads had an urgency in purchasing new 6 axle units and both railroads had the same concern; Overheating on steep mountain grades and in tunnels.
EMD came up with a good solution to move the air intakes down toward the frame to draw in cooler air. This stretched the locomotive from the standard SD40-2 and added an additional benefit for SP with the SD40T-2 extended range fuel tank.

As with the SD40-2, we tried to use a body mounted coupler. Did not work. So we are re-engineering the locomotives with truck mounted couplers like our ES44AC and SD70ACe locomotives.
For flexibility we will deliver the locomotive with an extra coupler-less truck and two add on pilots

Any chance the ditch lights can be done with separate Lighting tubes and LED's so those of us putting decoders in can turn them on/off independently of the headlights?

SP and NYS&W - my poor wallet. Can't wait! Preach on!  I just need to decide if I'd rather spend that in N or HO at this point. Seven years into Z and still no BNSF H-II GE loco, and I understand that the C44-9W is no longer on the table. |

The derivative of that phrase basically means "you're not welcome here" just FYI. I generally try to take the high road in such instances since it didn't seem like you really meant it. Yet, had I said that to someone on this forum, there would be people crying foul and two pages of moderator admonishment about forum decorum.  That's another good reason for me to move on. |
