There is a Japanese layout here in the UK that runs longish freight trains on his lower loop, using canted track and he has no problems. I had thought about the 245 for my new Z but have gone with flat for the look

I voted for SD40 as there is nothing else on that list for Milwaukee or Soo. If it's a Switcher how about SW1200 both my roads had them,or an FP or F45,F7 A and B has so many more options than the F3 that was released . disappointed really

I have built a few exhibition N scale layouts over the years, but am now on my second Z and just started my 3rd. as the guys have said, time laying track is a must, and keep everything clean. If the locos are a little hesitant to start, warm them through, with a couple of light engine moves, once done they run many miles at shows. enjoy www.dawdawes.com

I have been a user of DCC since 2003 on my N scale layouts, but not on my Z. Why you ask, well I like sound and have found the Kato soundbox works great linked to decent speakers under the layout.

I can't speak for the GP30 but my Soo and Milwaukee GP38s run many miles at exhibitions and have had only one chassis that went belly up, that was replaced by a dealer, so all good www.dawdawes.com

Tom the thing with Z is take your time, there's so much can be done. lay your track well, keep it clean and you will have great running trains (forget the MTL F7, looks ok runs crap) I have built 2 exhibition layouts here in the UK, goto www.dawdawes.com to check out Lincoln Z and California Coast. New Milwaukee in build at the moment with turntable and loco shed. Also check out Shasta by Kev Smith
