FWIW, I find using flexible guitar picks works really well for shell removal; got the idea from the "Z Trains Weekly" blog, I think.

Hmm...that conversion kit looks like just the ticket. If I ever score a Marklin caboose, that would be the next purchase for sure!
Thanks for the link.

I can't say for sure, since I don't have one, but judging by the photos I've seen, and if you want to use MTL trucks, you will have to move the new trucks farther out towards the car ends. It appears that the Marklin trucks sit too far towards the center.
If this is indeed the case, then I suppose using the truck-mounted couplers would be the easiest; but I'm only guessing.
Another option would be to replace the couplers with the MTL adapter set they offer; but then again, the position of the trucks would still be way off...
Let us know what you come up with; the Marklin car is nice looking, and a good option to the centered cupola of the MTL caboose.

My first impulse was to hit the "like" button, but after reading about the issues you've had with this expensive HO steamer, I guess that wouldn't be appropriate.
In any case, I am in full agreement regarding your thoughts on Z scale. Not only is it "blooming" into a viable modeler's scale, but its size is allowing people like me to enjoy building a reasonable size layout in a reasonable space. I am having a ball with it!

FWIW, here's a snap of the "Cape House" I've been working on. I opted to use tape for the roofing... Again, I really liked the self-adhesive backing used on the trim; everything fit together nicely. And, it's made right here in Oregon! Mark in Oregon

Gawd, that is some beautiful work! Is the large structure in the 2nd photo one of MTL's "boat works" kits? Mark in Oregon

Probably smaller buildings as the layout isn't very big. Conversely, RSLaser kits are often much too small, even in the background & I personally found them too flimsy to assemble. A highly experienced modeler might say otherwise. Although I've been in the hobby for many, many years, I have only recently switched to Z scale, so I'm no "expert". I did just this past week complete the building of the RSLaser kit #4031 "Cape House". I found the parts to be very well made, easy to piece together (I really like the self-adhesive backing) and it made up into a very nice little structure. I have no doubts I will be buying more from this maker. FWIW. Mark in Oregon

Jeff I have been involved with that discussion, and am waiting for a response from Mr. Graf as to a hoped for delivery date...but then, you obviously know all that! Mark in Oregon

The truth is, I did this with one Marklin car, and from that point forward, I only purchased MTL cars in the first place, because they are so much nicer looking. Bill in FtL I agree, though I will say I think the Marklin caboose is rather nice looking, and is quite different from MTL's "cabin car"; I wonder how difficult it would be to dump the stock trucks and couplers, and replace with MTL's...anyone here done that? Interesting.... So would this be the #2638? It's a solid block of resin(?), and has very fine details. I have no idea how I'm going to be able to paint in those windows! Mark in Oregon
