As my Z Marklin engine zips around my layout hauling AZL & Micro rolling stock, I marvel at the quality of our Z scale manufacturers' products. I'm especially grateful after spending 40 minutes on hold & 15 with tech support of a leading HO manufacturer.
My new 4-6-4 HO steam engine has failed to successfully complete a single revolution of my train club's 20' x 60' layout. While considerably less expensive engines run without mishap, my $400+ engine is nothing but an expensive paperweight at the moment.
After numerous derailments & an extended phone call, Ive learned two 15 cent springs on the front & rear trucks are the culprits.
This beautiful engine, with literally all the bells, whistles & bows a Z scaler can only dream about, sits in its box, useless, until I find time to drive 45 miles to the nearest approved service center. The company never offered to send me new springs. Phooey! I'll stick with Z!

My first impulse was to hit the "like" button, but after reading about the issues you've had with this expensive HO steamer, I guess that wouldn't be appropriate.
In any case, I am in full agreement regarding your thoughts on Z scale. Not only is it "blooming" into a viable modeler's scale, but its size is allowing people like me to enjoy building a reasonable size layout in a reasonable space. I am having a ball with it!

Okay, I'm definitely enamored with Z manufacturers. I called MTL re. 2 minor issues, sent them the items & they are repairing them for free. My HO super-expensive steam engine is still dead in the water. Sold to me as "new" by an authorized MTH seller, MTH had issued me an RA with a huge caveat; shipping both ways, a $25 diagnostic fee & $46/hr labor plus parts may fix my problem. Yup, MY problem because the loco was mfg. in 2009, so even though it is MIB, it's past their warranty window.
