I always break in my engines on DC first and all 3 ran 30 mins in fwd and rev. My decoder is properly installed and I can see the motor wire clips properly seated in the slots on the board. I checked continuity and I'm not shorted anywhere. But I think we can cross bad decoder off as the problem.
Today I swapped boards and loco 2 ran fine with board 3. The suspect board 2 worked fine at first in loco 3. but ran away at full power again. Did another factory reset and it appears to be functioning normal again. Today I had all three on track and had another runaway with all three taking off at full power. I've had this happen before with other engines, so I don't think its a decoder thing. My Zephyr DCS50 (Z scale coffee table base station) also dumped all the loco consists I had stored. Might be time to replace this controller as it's about 30 years old.

Decoder 2 installed fine, but will need a reset as it runs full speed regardless of throttle setting.
OK reset didn't fix. When I write a value to the decoder it moves an inch or so. Programmed the loco number and then tried to read it. Loco ran half a lap on program track! It took the new number and started normally in forward, but didn't slow down as I reduced the throttle until I got to zero and the stopped suddenly. When reversed, it took off at full speed without throttle input. Opening the throttle stops it.
Any ideas before I swap decoders?

My micro screwdrivers are not labeled so I don't know what size I was using. I ended up using a flat blade ground to fit. So far I only messed up one screw. Chewed the slot up breaking the motor side screws loose. But these screws are just waiting to jump into the carpet and escape, so I will need more in the near future. AZL how about stocking some? They shouldn't take up much space on the shelf.

BN 7279 is in service now with smooth running ZModell decoder. Initial impression great speed control and easy install if you have a Phillips #0 or 00.
1 down 2 to go.

Really guys, can you make these screws any smaller?
I managed to strip one trying to get the PCB out. What size are these screws and where do I get replacements? Also is there a recommended screwdriver size to use? Edit: ZModell recommends PH0 or PH00.

I'd give it a go to see if there were fewer bugs than I have had with the other two. Thank you for prioritizing the new SD40-2's, I've got 3 on the way. I hope you have enough success to expand your line even more.

Wait, these are in-stock?! I must have missed a memo. Guess I'm blowing my budget big time this month.

3 green machines on the way, life is good! If AZL does the White face, I'll grab them too. It's getting hard to split my time between HO and Z. People will really argue about anything. I beg to differ with you sir!

I will be ordering 3 when they are available in the US.
Can this decoder flash a rotary beacon as on the BN version?
I am assuming I will have to plumb it with a light pipe or fiber optic strand since it is so close to headlight.

Now don't all you retailers wish you had doubled your orders of ES44's from AZL?
Yes, I got mine, but more importantly I got my Green machine SD40-2's! Finally proper power for my coal trains, time to retire my SD45's.
Now how about a rerun of BN coal porters?
Need those SD60's (Oakway and BN) too.
and ....hint C30-7!!!!!!
Now to get me some decoders and dust off the coffee table..

Check for excessive solder on the pads that go under the clips on the frame. I've had to sand those down a bit on some locos.

Has anyone done a review video on this SD40-2?

I have a bunch of GP38's and have a few that run slow. Sometimes warming them up will help, especially if you consist with another unit that will pull it around the layout. But some just are born slow and stay that way. I tend to match them with other speed challenged engines and make a note of it in my roster list.

The destroyer in the diorama is 1:350 scale and Z-Scale is the closest match. Hi Peter, There are a number of resin and 3d printed locomotive IN 1/350 scale. Here's one example: 1/350 Richelieu dockside by Louis CarabottHead over to ModelWarships.com and ask the fine folks on the forum and you will find what you need.
