I am building a small diorama for the volunteer HMCS Haida naval museum in Hamilton Ontario. It shows "train busting" by a destroyer in Korea in 1953 ... That is, trains were shot off their tracks usually while exiting tunnels during that war in considerable numbers. The destroyer in the diorama is 1:350 scale and Z-Scale is the closest match. I'm looking for a steam locomotive (ideally Japanese but not necessarily), tender and at least one old box car. The locomotive DOES NOT need the motor, guts or even to be intact. It is going to be shown in the moment of being blown up (Haida scored a direct hit on a locomotive, first shot!)
Do you know of any sitting at the back of a drawer? ... dropped from a height? ... fried because of high voltage? ... chewed by a retriever?
I do not need it working nor all there. I will take it off your hands. The other rolling stock I will buy a la carte.
Please share this message with other Z scale people.
Thanks
Peter Lorimer

Peter, Can you post any pictures of a Korean locomotive of that era, or one similar to the one that was hit. I have a lot of German shells, but not sure what might be close. You can message me your email if you can't post a picture. Scott

Here's one example: 1/350 Richelieu dockside by Louis CarabottHead over to ModelWarships.com and ask the fine folks on the forum and you will find what you need.

Note that Korea, though it was part of the Japanese empire, is standard gauge and thus mostly didn't use Japanese domestic steam designs (except some regauged D51s, IIRC). Some of their steam was common with, or similar to, some *Chinese* classes. There are a bunch of Korean steam photos from that era at web.archive.org/web/20220829123751/http://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/indexknr.htm ...though many of the pictures don't work in the archive version. I'd say that sometimes American and sometimes European, not Japanese, models would be more useful starting points. Z models will look way too big in a 1/350 environment, so I expect you'll have to look elsewhere.

Thanks! I just assumed that because the Japanese built most of the infrastructure in Korea over the preceding century that they would have also built the railroads. No one looking at this diorama is likely to be knowledgeable to distinguish between Chinese/Japanese or even American but I will be as historically accurate as I can be. My destroyer model is based on a 1942 British version and she had a major refit 1949-50 and I'm refitting the model as I go ... and it was an extensive refit with all new guns, ordinance, etc.but I'm dealing with multi-generational naval vets including two that were actually there in Korea on two of those ships.

I think the Japanese did build most of the railroads in Korea, but not to Japanese domestic standards. I assume that's because Korea borders China and Korean railroads were made standard gauge to connect to Chinese railroads...

This was in 1953 mind you. That was 70 years ago and I'm probably safe to use Japanese stock. The PRC may have affected the Korean railroads back then but it seems a bit early for that.

I had another one in my files from the Korean war time. Also, I have this link to images of preserved steam in Korea.: www.internationalsteam.co.uk/trains/skorea01.htmlso,
