The large photos of this model look absolutely fabulous. I'm looking forward to a Milwaukee Road model.

Which Northern Pacific release is planned, Passenger or Freight? Also, NP ran ABA, are you planning on releasing ABA sets?
I have to plan ahead so I can end up with several ABA sets in both passenger and freight, so I need to choose which go to the stripper.

Looks like the first NP run will be passenger. I cannot give a release time at this date, since production is not yet completed. Sincerely, Hans (AZL)

Hi Everyone, just wondering if anyone has tried the drawbar connector. just wondering if it is more trouble than its worth. Does it fit in the stock case? looks like it might snap on and off but not sure. I've already dropped in 2 TCS decoders and man these little engines run great speed is just right and very quite. still can't get over how small they are compared to the E8/9.

still can't get over how small they are compared to the E8/9. According to Wikipedia articles ... E8 is 70ft 3in (21.31m) while an F3 is 51ft 2in (15.6m). An F3 is 71% of the length of an E8.

Don't get me wrong Frank, they look right. Makes a Marklin look silly. Believe the extra 29% houses a second motor

I'm curious about the size difference between MTL and AZL F7s. It seems to me AZL's new F3 looks undersized. Perhaps, some one out there can provide me some insight.
Thanks,
Steve

Did you come to that statement holding one of each side to side in your hand? Or just watching pictures? Because these can be deceiving..

Sitting an AZL F3 next to a MTL F7... I think F7 are slightly larger than F3s.... But I've been wrong before... Most F3s have longer smoke stacks than that of F7s. That may be the most distinguishing characteristic though.

Here are two quick iPhone photos show the AZL F3 and a MTL F7. Note the one looking down at the bottom of the locos. The AZL may be a hair smaller, but just barely. What stands out to me is that the MTL trucks are longer, and AZL's are shorter (and more prototypical based on prototype photos). I think what may be the real issue here is that AZL's F3s have a greater level of fidelity. Due to this, they almost appear smaller as they have more intricate detailing. I also think what we may have here is a classic example of all of us getting set in our mindsets. We all have known the F7s for 30 years and just assume all F units should look and feel the same. The new kids are on block are definitely not business at usual and it may take a little time to get use to them. I can personally vouch I had to look twice at the F3s, and appreciate them even more now that I have compared the models to prototype photos. We all should tip our hat to Nelson Grey, the original designer of the MTL F7s. These little beasts have been the back bone of US Z scale for decades. AZL's models are good representations of new technologies and advances in the hobby. No knocks against MTL's F7s here, just times are a changing... Rob

Thanks Rob for your analysis. From most vantage points, it appears to me that the overall size difference is negligible, which I find a pleasant surprise. Obviously, the AZL F units, due to technological advances in the hobby, have more detail and upgraded mechanical and electronic characteristics. What I like is that those who have collected copious MTL F units don't have to retire them. MTL's units will look acceptable lashed up with AZL's counterparts. Unfortunately, operating both under DCC is another matter.
