January 2015 New Release – Part 2

AZL is excited to announce the release of EMD E8 and E9 locomotives. These are the first injection molded E8/E9s on the market.
The E8/E9s feature:

- Prototype specific detailing
- AZL’s powerful can motor
- Dual flywheels
- Traction tires
- Directional controlled LEDs
- Optional truck with mounted front coupler – INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGING!
- DCC ready

Yes AZL is including an extra truck with every E8A locomotive! This truck has a coupler mounted on it. If customers plan to double-head their E8s, it is recommended the front truck be replaced with the one with the coupler attached. The first release is Louisville & Nashville. The L&Ns are the ideal motive power for AZL’s L&N heavyweight passenger cars released last month. Four road numbers are available.

Is there a pic of the E8 with the front truck mounted coupler on it. I think it would look weird without the pilot. That's the only thing I'm worried about.

Can't wait for CB&Q, BN, SP, UP and SF

I don't have a photo yet of the E8 with the pilot removed and the optional truck installed. I did test swapping one out, and it definitely looks a bit odd. But it works great! It is very interesting since the coupler on the truck does not extend much from the front of the locomotive. It is very much a close couple situation. I just love the fact that every unit comes with a third truck.

I wish it had some kind of pilot because I'll be running AAA. Like a pilot with a very wide opening for the coupler.

Not sure if it will look okay when you go head to head on the rear two engines. Especially if the missing pilot was not black.

Your brass E8A units had functional coupler on the pilots I believe.

This is a cool and unexpected release! I knew the E8s were coming just didn't think it would be so soon. So how about a heads up on SP road names? hopefully not too soon... spent a lot on buying myself Christmas gifts from those black Friday AZL direct specials!
BTW, I viewed the PDF that Z-Scale Monster had available for changing out trucks and it does look like the plow gets discarded. I think a guy could modify it so it could stay in place for the truck mounted coupler, it would limit the curve radius to how much it was cut though.
Any B units planned?

We will produce "B" units for the railroads that operated them; however, they will only be available for sale as a part of A & B Unit sets. (In some cases we will make A-B-B sets for railroad that ran them that way)

Moving back to N for a pilot seems a bit extreme. This is very much a form versus function design approach. AZL really stepped up to the plate in their design to include two different trucks and packages that allow operators choices. With the pilot installed as delivered, the locomotive is sleek and gorgeous. But for operations, having the ability to switch to a truck mounted coupler is ideal. The coupler sits actually back, almost under the shell, which allows more of a close coupling. It is really cool.

Personally, I plan to assign a lead loco to the consist and keep the pilot on that loco. The trailing locomotive will have the coupler mounted truck installed. I have test run this combination and I am personally okay with how it looks.

To have both, a pilot and truck mounted coupler, the pilot would have to have a large gap. But this may be a situation that you have to use some modeling license and modify the pilot and mount it to the shell in a way that allows the coupler to move freely on the truck. If you try this, take photos and share the result.

As for the brass E7/E8/E9s AZL released, they came with a full pilot in the font. The coupler was body mount. The rear coupler was truck mounted.
