The CZ F3Bs had steam generators and I think the F7Bs that were purchased to match the FP7As had an extra boiler capacity, too. Yep... From memory, WP worked hard to provide sufficient steam heating for the 12-16 car CZ. As delivered, it seems the FP7 held extra water (and that tanks were added) and that both of the F7B bought with each set had larger steam generators. Some others, F3 B units and the other F7 B units held a standard combo... This caused the newly purchased set to be quickly split to resolve the steam deficit. I do remember that the used F3 A unit that came from NYO&W “Old and Weary” numbered 801-D didn’t even have a steam generator... It was a mess! We’ll have to wait on Mark to get to his notes!!!

Yes but did you see it before it went into the paint shop? rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2075468When the F7s went into the paint shop here they all were supposed to lose their alphabetic suffix and come out green. 913 was a “heritage” paint scheme. www.wplives.org/locomotivepages/wp917d.htmlIt was unique in my mind until Curn brought up the two UP reprints. BTW does it look like UP used Habor Grey ? I’m pleased to report that the FRRS has posted some of their publications on line, so I won’t have to do so much digging when I get home. However they have an issue cover of the EMD factory photo of the set that the fab 4 917 came from: wplives.org/train_sheet_archive/pdf/ts120.pdfWhile it’s b&w, the tone and textures suggest the grills might have left the factory orange! Finally researching Hans’ 914 suggestion, I find that 914A got the Perlman Green with a 3” road number with suffix on the upper rear panel. Yet another paint scheme. Tell you what, for the time being let’s agree to disagree. It looks like the International Rail Fair is going to happen this year. They have never had Z there. Jeff and I plan to be there, why not pull out a bit of the money you didn’t spend on two years of NTS, grab your sample case, pop out to Sacramento and we can discuss it over a beer?

Just to summarize all mentioned here: The paint scheme for 920 is wrong, it was only ever used on 913. Full Stop. 920 had a paint scheme covering the whole roof black plus around the front windows plus most likely the grills. Because without proper preparation paint doesn't stick well to stainless steel, the paint was wearing off quickly. They did a better job later with the preparation of the green which seem to last better.
But all that is easy to fix if you like it prototypical. What I found a bit of a disappointment is the prominent grills of the F7 are hardly visible on the model, but the openings are over-prominent. It appears its the reworked tooling or modeled on the F3, because the opening on the F7 were all rectangular without the two chamfered corners in the middle. Well, can be fixed too with some etched parts...

Gerd: How easy to combine the nose from an F3, the body of an MTL F7A and the chassis of a Marklin F7 to make a FP7... Something to be aware of is that shell height is different between MTL Original shell (left) and the new one (right). I Believe the former matches Märkin and the later AZL. My preliminary analysis was that the AZL GP38-2 would work for wheel base but I haven’t popped the shell to see about the frame dimensions.

To replace the grills is key. I’ve got some MTL WP “B” shells. I’m going to use them from the orange line upwards. This, melded this to the AZL F3 main body should work. The goal is to lengthen the final body @3mm to represent 4 ft in Z Scale to equal the length of an FP7.
I need to make an FP7 set or find someone to sell me an F3 passenger set....

AZL would have used Etched Grills if we had tooled the F7 today. Even if the Grills are correct for the early phase F7s, some of the effect is lost. And correct, the black roof line stretched to the windshield. Should be an easy fix for whoever wants to do so. This was not obvious to us at the time we OKed the artwork and maybe it was the 913 that threw us off track. (We prefer to be on the track as does all of us)

Did AZL make these with modified F3 tooling?

Sometimes I just think to myself..... Who gives a Rats A**. The product coming out of AZL is fantastic and appreciate the work they do.
Thank you Hans, Rob and Rob for creating more reasons to spend my money. At least I can keep up with my wife’s spending on cloths and accessories....

The F3 and F7 were done at the same time in 2013. We made different shells with interchangeable parts. Some of the parts also interchanges with the E7 and E8 locomotives.
