Such a disappointment. My favorite locomotive (SD40-2) in my favorite CP Rail scheme finally arrives... with a major flaw! Diesels are grimy and sooty on the roof to be sure, however I have never seen a CP Rail locomotive in Action Red with a jet black top. Not to mention the bell and the whistle! I'm having flashbacks to N scale paint schemes that came out in the 1980s. I have to admit, that made me pause a bit too. I have been a model railroader for 40-plus years and I don't recall ever seeing this...not even in 1980s N-Scale. At best, AZL would have helped themselves by using a matte finish versus the ultra-shine option. I recall having the same reaction when I received the recent Black Friday sale KCS SD70ACe's. Again, a very shiny black top in contrast to the gray paint scheme....surely that cannot be correct? Well, shortly after delivery the KCS units received an anti-skid coating on the roof areas that made it appear that the roof is black. (again, a matte finish would have REALLY made them look 1000% better) I suspect that the CP Rail units in Hans' photo may have received a similar anti-skid treatment, perhaps as an experiment? You can see overspray in areas, and note that parts of the cab roof aren't coated or partially coated as well. It takes about 15 seconds of Google to know the black is not the norm, so I think this is an example of AZL "trying to do too much". I've yet to find a second photo of the black roof phenomenon. Even if they were going for the anti-skid detail, they *way* missed the mark with the shiny finish and dead-clean mask lines.

My last one sold at 6:34AM PST. Web page updated manually about 20 mins ago. Thirty-six–minutes? One unit from a limited edition of 50 sold about ev’ry half hour, then. Wow. Pause, ay. Tells us a lot ’bout the fan base, the Aloha Z Line enthusiasts, the collectors, etc. What’s more impressive: A normal run or a limited edition run that sells out within 48-hours? Snatch ’em up when see ’em. Ain’t gonna be there much mo’—That be some of the wisdom imparted upon me from BAZ BoyZs. Today, I am quite content. Scott

You'll see about a third of them sitting on eBay for $700-800 over the next five years. You're not just competing with other model railroaders/enthusiasts/collectors. Fourth category is speculators, and they get really active when the actual (approximate) run quantities are announced.

CP, the 5600 series made by EMD, not GMD. Maybe the top is a bit too shiny, but we use photos for reference. Bell should be where it is supposed to. azlforum.com/attachment/download/7744
What year(s) are your pics from? I did not see any of those units with the black roofs, perhaps they were re-painted (or washed) at some point?
In your pic, the black areas on the angled cab roofs on units #5608 and #5603 look more like soot wash-down to my eye.
These are from rrpicturearchives.net, yet seem to show red roofs on units #5606 and #5625 at the time the pics were taken:
To make the roofs less shiny, one could brush on some flat black weathering powders. (Pure black on a model can be overpowering, so use it sparingly -- less is more.)

I don't get it. 5625 is not among the road numbers released, and 5606 is wearing a different scheme in the picture (i.e., it was repainted). This picture from 1974 seems to show black on the roof, see especially above the windows: www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47481

I learned the hard way how quickly the limited edition runs go. Spent 6 years looking on ebay for a mopac or Katy. I learned not to think this time and just hit add to cart.
Not sure what happened to the ebay market but i never really see private stock for sale anymore.

In and of itself, it seems to have an appeal-value. Should one be a model railroader, an experienced Ebay seller, and an investor, a limited edition of a road and era for which one has little interest, all of the sudden, becomes very interesting. WTF?! was my reaction to a set of discontinued Full Throttle hoppers, on Ebay, being sold several times over their fair market value, for lack of a better term. Ev’ry time I scrolled by it, under my breath, I said, “You crazy, man.” That seller might have been a speculator. Scott

Do the SD70Aces have working ditch lights? (using light tubes I presume) What DCC decoder(s) will fit in them? The single light pipe is used for all. You will have to partially disassemble the shell to clip the 2 drops, then embed 0402 LED’s in each. You will need a TCS AZL4, (SKU 1550) (https://www.tcsdcc.com/product-page/azl4) for the added Ditch Lights. You wire the 2 LED’S to the F1 & F2 pads (see above 1 page manual). You do not need a Resistor for TCS decoders (they are built-in) but if you feel they are too bright after installing IN the shell and looking at the front, try a 10K resistor 1/8 Watt. Cathodes[-], (usually Black on prewired LED’s) to F1 or F2 (doesn’t matter, they alternate electronically). The 2 Red leads (Anodes[+] are twisted together and soldered to the Blue pad. Program: CV51 (F1) to 10 CV51 (F2) to 11

Please, please, please! A my fault would be accepted 🤨

Here is a quick video show us test running the SD70ACe - Spirit of UP. So this sounds like distributors may have them in stock to fulfill orders by end of next week?

Any idea when the ES44s with regular UP and BNSF paint schemes might be available? I missed the past releases and don't yet have any. Ready to buy at least 3 of each.Thanks.

Typically late nights (US East Coast Time) before the 1st and 15th are the best time to check your favorite dealer... usually, but not always. Sometimes they are busy enjoying the tropical breezes or whatnot.
