Hi Folks, An idea from the Brian Keyser has come to life: 20' Trash Containers to make a proper Trash Train. The prototype is done. They are actually two 40' bases with two 20' containers on each base, so they can fit in our 40' hole spacing. They should work in any of our intermodal cars, but look best and most prototypical on our 89' intermodal flat cars. A prototype picture is attached below. This was done in grey, but production will be a darker solid color. This has NOT gone into "cottage production" - I'm looking to determine community interest before investing any more time in this project. These would be sold in 3 packs of 3 loaded 89' flatcars with trash containers. They would be shot in a pre-colored material - possibly dark blue or green. Most of these containers have minimal markings, so they will be unpainted and undecorated. Any replies with an indication of interest would be welcome! -AZL Labs Management

Aren’t those running on the Northwest “Garbage” Train on the Snake River?

I've seen ones like those down in the South, usually 4 per flatcar. Most of the ones running up here in the NW, are double stack containers of garbage.

They look good Rob. I use to see / hear them going through Baltimore back when I was working at M&T Bank Stadium.
Not my Video but here is a look at the real thing. OH you may want to turn your volume down a touch before playing the video there is a fair bit of wheel Squeal.

So, we need brown flatcars and green containers, then ? Which other locomotives would go with such a train, other than the blue CSX ones shown in the film ?

I've seen NS, UB, BNSF, CSX Bright Future (blue & gray) as well as the dark blue, and A Kansas city Southern go by the Stadium when I was there. And I'll bet most of the other major Railroads have pulled the trash container train as well. Containers are usually Green or Blue but Gray, Black, and Rusty oxide Red are not uncommon.

CSX must have the contract. I have seen CSX pulling these through Columbus. Agree on the colors. The ones I saw were Blue, Gray and Black.

First, I will say...nice job on the tooling. Those look really great. The chain detail is really amazing. I'm sure those modeling areas/era where these trains are common will buy them.
But, interest level is zero for me. I've seen the 2-unit articulated cars around here and that's about it. They use similar specialized containers that are shorter and doublestacked on each end, single stacked in the middle on each side of the articulation. And they're not in unit trains like these cars or the aforementioned doublestacks in the PNW. For Atlas to do them, there has to be a decent market for them...although, likely some bias with them being in New Jersey where these are common.

Thanks for the feedback - I’ve added a poll to the top of the thread to help measure interest.

Maybe just the trash containers be made available, so those with smaller layouts could put a couple on smaller flat cars?

I feel like the idea behind this is to be able to move more of their 89ft cars out the door. Good thought though. Might be neat to 3D print the actual skeleton-type cars (like Atlas did) that haul these too.. should be do-able if you can keep the center of gravity low enough. Key would be keeping the weights as far toward the bottom of the loaded containers as possible. And/or print the car in brass.

(Matching pins to the holes is important to make sure these containers don't fly off in a curve!) I think the obvious choice for a shorter car would be the Micro-Trains 60ft flat modified to represent a Trailer Train/TTX "VTTX" COFC flat car. It could carry three 20ft containers. Walthers HO VTTX COFC FlatIf someone scratchbuilt or 3D printed the container pedestals then they would just adapt to whatever pins/holes you have. (or, simply tack them onto the deck of the flat car using various methods....container "putty", WS mounting adhesive, doublesided tape, etc. EDIT: BTW, you wouldn't necessarily have to use TTX cars....just about any of the MTL cars could be patched over, weathered, and used for this purpose...since you would be fudging a little bit anyway. While I am not aware of this happening, it's very plausible that former VTTX cars (or other 60ft flats modified for COFC service) could have been hauling these trash containers.

Well I was thinking either a 60' flat car, or why not a 40' flat with 2 trash containers on them? What about a 60' bulkhead flat car? They are available in TTX, maybe not prototype, but still fun for a smaller layout. Looks like the ends of MTL bulkhead could be removed for instant flat car? 2 or 3 containers on them tacked down with glue or what have you...
