So, I'm building my first Z-scale and it appears I've burned up my 3 week old AZL ALCO RSD5. I test ran it on the track layout that I have set up last week with no problems. When I ran it again today, no motion, but a lot of burning smell.
I'm using a Marklin controller, so I don't think its that.
Premature failure? Or user error

Some probabilities:
1) were you running “märklin-speed”? They commonly run FAST! 2) did it stall (when you weren’t noticing) for some minutes in time? That will heat up the motor fairly quickly.

Hi welcome to the AZL forum. Sorry to hear your having troubles with your first Z scale layout. We need a little more info to help diagnose what may have gone wrong.
What model Marklin controller? Which Terminals on the controller did you hook the track wires to? Can you post some pictures of what you have and how its wired up?
David

I would say emphatically "no" to the high speed. If anything it was slow. I would say 15-20 seconds to circumvent a 20x30 oval. No stalls either.
From what I have read, Marklin runs on a lower voltage than AZL. So unless Marklin doesn't have a current limiter...I'm not sure how a burnout would happen.

David Hi, Controller is a Marklin 67014, connected to a Marklin 8590 feeder track. The feeder was prewired (Red and Brown) and I connected them to the controller the same way.

Ok it looks like you have it wired correctly Next I would Check the markings on the wall wart to make sure its only putting out 12v DC Do you have a meter that you could hook to the pack to make sure it is not putting out too much voltage?
As pictured I cant see where you have done anything wrong, If you bought the loco new You might want to contact your dealer, I would think that the loco is still under warranty.

I just check the "wall wart" (I like that name) the range is -11.24 to 11.23 VDC . Contacting dealer and AZL. Dealer's "policy" says to deal with AZL directly. Hopefully, I'm not screwed ... I was looking forward to doing this.
