The first coach has fluted roof, and on the sides below the windows, and the fifth vehicle appears to be a dome/observation with a rear light at top on left. Does this help anyone identify the train ? ( I assume it will be a “set” release ).

The first car is a Budd 10/6 sleeper (likely UP Pacific series.) Then maybe a Valley series and an Ocean series....
The last three are (likely City of Los Angeles) Baggage Dorm, UP dome diner and UP dome lounge.
I am listed in the Handbook of Railroad Officials ...this is my take.
BTW: They look great!

I had mentioned earlier that it would be very easy to do the CoLA with minimal new tooling for some of the cars unique to the CoLA back when the CoSF was released. This would also be my guess as to these new cars. BTW - They really do look great.

What would be. Real stocking stuffer is a blunt-end Budd 10-6: www.northeast.railfan.net/images/sp9028.jpgSeems like it could be an end cap option. By the 1950s both UP and SP were running 10-6s as EOT and the blunt end would be a nice option. Otherwise we have to hang a tail light in the vestibule. Mark

Have you ever considered designing the passenger cars with .window inserts? PS standard sleepers and chair cars are mostly the same with different window patterns. Higher initial cost but the incremental costs for additional cars should be lower.

Higher initial cost but the incremental costs for additional cars should be lower. In tooling a project, that’s called a slide change. We use them when we can (most manufacturers do) but the cost savings can be minimal if any at all. To create a tooling design that accepts slide changes is more complex than a single shot design, and introduces the possibility of having seam marks where the slide connects to the tooling. Furthermore, our production runs are short enough that we typically do them in high strength aluminum instead of tooling steel as aluminum is good for over 10,000 shots, where steel is usually preferred when you get closer to 100,000 shots. Something like our roller bearing trucks have gone over 100,000 shots, but few other components do. Additionally, aluminum is less expensive to tool, so if it ever wears out, we just took another mold, and frequently make improvements at that time. You really need steel to do a slide change because of all the extra motion of the tool. Most of the time we just took the whole project in separate aluminum molds because it’s quicker and less expensive than a single steel tool with slide changes. So your basic thought is correct, but like most things, the reality has quite a few more variables in the equation.

We will be sharing new products with you out in 2022. The above is a little teaser. At the moment we have 3 injection locomotives in the works that we have not been communicated. One will probably be ready late next year and the 2 others are 2023 releases. We are a little slow on reruns, but hope to catch up here as well.

Assuming "3 injection locomotives in the works" mean new tooling. There was mention of an SD70ACe re-run that would have hit around this time on the original estimate of schedule...can you speak to any other re-runs like maybe the ES44? Depending on what those other 3 locos are, I may be less interested in the ES44 re-run but still curious.
I assume one of those 3-in-the-works might be the aforementioned GP40-2? My memory banks seem to recall some mention of an F40PH and maybe an F9 also as being on the AZL wish list. A C44-9W and/or ES44 re-run is at the top of my list, along with the SD40-2's.
Anyway, I'm just sitting here planning for the SD40-2's and whatever else you guys come up with will be a bonus.

Might as well also inquire about freight cars...any update on the following? 1. The teased AutoMax articulated autoracks. 2. A previously hinted-at new run of bethgons.(BN, Multiple BNSF, TGNX, FPPX/LCRX, et al) 3. Additional PS2-CD's (BNSF Circle, Kyle, NYDX, more early UP, Rock Island "Rock" Scheme/CNW-patch)
Any other new 90's/2000's era stuff in the works?

Unrelated to the passenger cars shown at the top of this thread, I'm super excited because I just received another box with an engineering sample of another unannounced product! I'm attaching a picture so you can see how we get parts and partially assembled pieces to review as the products make progress. Usually products are about 6 months away from release when they get to this stage, but it can be quicker. This is an opaque but meaningful way to say that 2022 is going to be another great year for new Z scale products from AZL!
