I switch the guts of the AZL coupler with MTL’s. Trim the nipples off the MTL coupler. Then drill a hole in the coupler cover, and secure it with a MTL screw. It doesn’t as wide as a full MTL coupler, but it will do automatic uncoupling.

Like the Dash9. 😁 They are finally releasing locomotives and color scheme you want.

CSX joe, I feel your frustration. My first 2 locos in Z SCALE were AZL GP38-2's and they were lemons. That why 95% of my Z loco's are MTL. The rivet counters say they're out of scale, BUT THEY RUN And THEY'RE DEPENDABLE. Until AZL makes every locomotive at KATO or ATLAS N scale "running quality" level, right out of the box, I won't buy. Always check under the hood. One burned, twice shy. All the detail in the world added to a shell DOES NOT MATTER if the mechanism is crap! As they say in politics "slap lipstick on a pig and it's still a pig". Good Luck In your defense, the first run of the GP38 are the worse engine AZL. It’s just in front of the last run of the SD70M, so they don’t all run great. That’s from somebody that has an about 90 locomotive. Also, let’s not kill the messenger for telling the truth.

I believe it’s the power pickup. They tend to get loose, and loose contact with the pickup in the trucks. Turn the engine upside down, and see if they stay in the middle of the chassis pickup when you turn the trucks.

It is also appropriate that this post is made on AZL's forum. A company which is quick to cover faults, give solutions, and I imagine they don't pass faulty products either. I'll bet they have stories like the one in the video as well. Sorry, but I have to disagree with you completely. The faults with the GP38 were denied and ignored for years, and then once acknowledged they charged a hefty upgrade fee and made you return the defective parts. AZL's answer to locomotive problems is usually "what did you do?", or worse "send it to this guy...there's a good chance he'll do nothing and keep it forever, but he's the best we got". None of this is remotely similar to how ScaleTrains operates. I get it that we're comparing apples to bowling balls here. The market for HO and N products vs Z is planet-level different. And ScaleTrains is not the norm....there are more examples of companies that operate more like AZL than there are of those that emulate ScaleTrains. But let's not paint a picture of AZL that doesn't look like them. How AZL handle the GP38 chassis problem is an example of how not to handle a problem. It’s the only time I know where I buy something defective, and I have to pay to get it fixed. Nobody wants to pay for warranty work, but you have to do the right what’s wrong for your customer.

Define functional. Sometimes you can swap out the AZL couch let with MTL couplers.

I bought it long time ago, so I doubt it’s the same. They are custom build , so I guess at $150

Mark you know AZL doesn't horse around... I don’t know about that. NS is probably the most produced color scheme from the east.

How about a GP60. Even thought CSX only has 3 of them, but they are very unique.

On the Dinner module, I see some gravel very close to the rails. That could cause it to run rough. Also, clean the inner portion of the rails also, because the wheels pickup power from the side of the wheels also.
