Not having a lot of room to work with is the biggest advantage of z scale. We can have realistic length trains when other scales cannot. Do we have shortcomings, yes we do, but if we work around it. We can have a great looking layout and nice size train.

Little space requirements is one of the biggests advantages of Z scale. Currently I only have a small switching layout 12" x 3' .. and still not ready :-). Little hobby space and not being able to work on scenery, got me into Z scratchbuilding of rolling stock. Here comes an other advantage: you need less detail to get a realistic looking model, compaired to HO. So, meanwhile I have my SW1000 for switching cars on my layout :-). ...but I would like to see an AZL GP60 ....it's shell would fit on a GP38-2 chassis. It might be an nice addition to the SD70.

Mark I'm just getting stocked up on track to build a layout also. Basic layout will be 96" x 30" with option to add on. What size are you planing on building? Bob Hi Bob, The layout that I'm working on right now is about 80" x 33" (this fits atop a 6' fold up table very well). This will be the center piece as I plan on expanding to each end with similar sized layouts that may or may not be included for operation of the center, maybe with one being a dogleg. My plans are to have slopping hills and a gentle grade with bridges and crossings, a couple ovals and 8s. Probably won't be much flat and straight track, the center piece will be a transition from low desert (one expansion)to high country with evergreens (the other extension). All of these layouts will be modular with covers so when they are not in use they will be protected from the dust, the dust is terrible here in southern AZ. I plan on having very good dioramic detail modeling with Union Pacific and Southern Pacific landscapes, hopefully it will come close to the image that is in my minds eye! I also have been accumulating a lot of track, locos, and rolling stock, I like getting those runner packs, they are always good deals!

Dom, Mrja, Don't get me wrong, I guess I was trying to emphasize that the only GE loco (that I know of) is that one from the past (the brass C44) and I have not seen any "U-boats" offered by anyone... I would really like to see Z scale take off but with so few manufactures it's so wonder one goes into the local hobby shop and asks for- "Z-SCALE!??" "We don't carry that scale, nobody wants them!" But I am still going to build my layout and I have chosen Z scale because I can have much more track, locos, rolling stock, and scenery in a much more affordable space. Respectfully, the new kid on the block, Mark Mark, don't get me wrong neither. I'm not at all complaining about the lack of choice in Z. At least regarding rolling stock (because considering other parts of our beloved scale, I'm simply dying for turnouts à la HO or N Shinohara, Atlas or ME....). I'm very pleased with what is already beeing offered. We now have a good choice of EMD locos and I'm really happy for that. Including GP38-2s that are very useful for me, because in the prototype they are one part of the backbone of my prototype railroad's fleet. The other part beeing U23Bs... And outside of that I think about other GE lovers, and ALCO lovers, etc.. But I'm confident we'll have all that in the future... About modelrailroading stores that don't carry Z scale, what's the issue at the era of internet? Myself I haven't been in a store for more than 3 years (the last time while in layover in Miami, having purchased a MTL SD40) and I don't miss anything for our hobby... Dom

Mark, you can hide couple engines in your pocket. Try to do that with HO. Best way to sneak a engine into the house is to put it in a shirt pocket.
