Signs are everywhere & in many eras, but how does one go about creating signs in Z scale? My computer's smallest font is 6; okay for creating signs on large buildings & silos, etc. but much too large for store fronts or even a town's Wecome to ... sign. I have even failed to find a simple Rail Road Crossing sign (non-electric). Any and all suggestions welcomed!

I design the sign in Print Shop (or similar program), print it, scan it and re-size the jpeg to the desired size then copy it back to Print Shop for final printing. You can also copy a sign from the internet and resize it.

Also most printer drivers in Windows have a "Zoom" option that will allow you to reduce to 10%.

Draw Your signs with any (bitmap) program in any size, but take care to have at least a resolution of 1000dpi for the final image, or You will get aliasing ("stairs" on non vertical/horizontal lines). For myself I use a size of about 40dots/mm (about 1000dpi) for drawing, so it's easy to specify the size of the printer output in the program.

In addition to printing your own, there are a multitude of print and mechanical signs on the market today, particularly on Ebay. I have been looking at several and found some I think would fit very well in my layout but I'm a long way from any of them. With so many to choose from, you really have to take your time and decide which one's and how many. Placement is also key to decision making.

I've looked on eBay & there's plenty of crossing lights & guards but I've yet to find a simple X crossing sign. If you know of some, would appreciate the links.

Found a solution! Found an image on Google, printed it out & then reduced it to proper scale. Then I copied the reduced image onto heavy card stock. Cut it out & mounted it on a Diamond match stick.
