The heavy-weight passenger cars are back – Southern Pacific Daylight!
70047-Daylight SP Daylight Limited Set Seven car set
There are few truly iconic transportation liveries that resonate strongly with both obsessive enthusiasts and casual observers. Southern Pacific’s Orange and Red “Daylight” scheme is one of the very few. Today’s generation never saw a “Daylight” in operation, but the blaze of sun setting colors applied to smooth steel is still instantly recognizable as an image of quality and action.
On rare occasion we bend our internal rules regarding “fantasy” paint schemes. We only do it when the case is so compelling that it cannot be denied. This is one of those cases. “Daylight” is one of those schemes.
To the purist, take heart: Many of the daylight cars produced in this set were real, and saw plenty of action in revenue service – mainly on the 1941 San Juaquin Daylight. Let’s look at those cars first:
SP 6085 was a Class 70-B-8 baggage car that was painted in Daylight colors in 1941 for use on the San Juaquin Daylight from Los Angeles to Oakland Pier via the San Juaquin Valley and Tehachapi Pass.
Dining Car 10148 was Class 77-D-9 that received Daylight colors in 1946, again for use on the San Juaquin Daylight. This train was combined with the Sacramento Daylight in Lathrop where it was coupled next to the Coffee Shop car of the Sacramento Daylight to form a more complete meal service for the duration of the trip to Los Angeles.
SP 2920 was a Class 75-CS-4 Lounge car that was painted in Daylight colors in March 1947 as a replacement for Tavern Car SP 10311 on the San Juaquin Daylight. The latter was badly damaged during a collision at Kingsburg, California on February 4, 1947.
We have produced a Heavyweight Observation car for this set with the number SP 2950. While SP 2950 was an Observation car used in Daylight service, it was a modern lightweight observation car; however, there were several Daylight painted Heavyweight Business cars on the SP system including the SSW Dixie and SP 146, so the car is not a complete fantasy. This car number was a bit of a compromise between a number used in Daylight service and the correct car.
Similarly, we have found photographic evidence of Southern Pacific Chair cars and Pullman Sleepers painted in Daylight Colors, but the details could not be confirmed. They appear to be used in Maintenance of Way operations, or some other special purpose. For our set we have included our Paired Window coach without a number, as well as the Pullman 12-1 “Alamo” and Pullman 8-1-2 “De Peyster” all painted in Daylight colors to round out the train.
