Does anyone know or have tried to use the GP7/9 pilot w/coupler on the GP38? Is it maybe a direct fit, or does it have to be modified? AZL Direct sells just the pilot for the GP7/9 and I just want to make sure it's adaptable before I order some!

Stay tuned.....

It is just slightly wider the GP38's opening but that's a good thing I believe it could be filed down to fit with some CA. I don't think it could be done as a removable part as it doesn't have the holes on the body to snap it in. Also the pilot flares out at the bottom so the front handrails might need to be adjusted

I was able to mount one without cutting the nubs off, I just drilled a couple of holes right where they fit in, and it fits perfectly... No gluing either! Now if I could just get the SD70 pilots I'd be happy! I need a plow for my GP38!!

I'm discovering the existence of these pilots... I definitly need some for my own GP38-2s and for my GP30's back.
Do you guys know whether included AZL coupler can easily be removed and swapped with a MTL coupler (#905 if my reminds are OK)?

Dom the couplers on the pilots and plows are basically static couplers. They connect to a small post in the pilot and plow. There is no box on them like you have on the 905s. The AZL coupler box has to be removed from the truck in order for the plows and pilots to be installed.
I am not sure how you could add a working MTL coupler to the pilot or plow.

OK Rob, thank you. Then I think I'm going to scratchbuild my own pilots in order to insert MTL coupler boxes... Dom

Here is a photo of my GP38 and pilot. I did file off the steps and drilled holes for the handrails as well. Hopefully I will get a SD70 Plow and try that since it has working coupler... As of right now I can still couple cars to it, and pull them around a 195mm curve... At least cars shorter than 89' (though I don't have anything less than 50' so.... )

Pilot area rather dark on this picture... Please could you enclose another picture, maybe with more light?
BTW what coupler did you use for this conversion? MTL?

It's just a standard gp7-35 pilot. But I will try to get a better photo.

Very nice and interresting, thank you. Will shortly do the same on my 1st FCCM GP38-2, as I've just received the 1.5mm thick styrene plate that'll let me make the shims I'll put between shell and MTL couplers.... Then I'll use a far thinner styrene sheet in order to cut pilots in... Dom

Nice hopefully it'll look nicer than my handiwork lol, I've only been tinkering with Z for like a year or so total... But I have been in N since I was 11... So almost 15 years now...
