Interesting choice for the E8. What were your thoughts and plans behind this selection? I wonder if it was in order to more easily adapt to existing Marklin rolling stock:

It could be used with the Micro-Trains Amtrak commuter set as well. I have to think (maybe hope) that AZL has some streamlined and/or smoothside passenger cars in the works. That seems to be an enormous gap in Z-scale (think Santa Fe, California Zephyr, Amtrak, etc.).

Didn't AZL show some Amfleet (a.k.a. Amtube) rounded corrugated Budd cars at NTS?

We thought that Amtrak would be a popular E8 locomotive. And yes, we thought of the old Marklin passenger cars when we decided to make it. It is a reality also for us, that we cannot make everything available at once. But down the road, who knows?

This is similar to the Santa Fe F3's, running in front of several märklin Santa Fe sets. It's a start that we all can live with !

Amtrack anything using older engines would be good mixed with anything from what, 71 to 76? You can mix and mach all kinds of cars and engines. Not a dumb idea at all.

I had forgotten how ragtag Amtrak looked when it started. I seem to see a few heavyweight cars in the article. Anybody know if heavyweights were ever painted Amtrak Phase I?

An interesting discussion can be found HEREShort answer is, I do not think so. MAYBE some on the Clocker service (Old PRR P-70 cars) were painted in Amtrack colors, but they had two axel trucks, not three. Also MAYBE a few heavyweight baggage cars made it into Amtrak colors, but I can find no evidence. Amtrak really preferred the Budd Stainless Steel cars over any others, and rapidly got rid of the other pullman heritage cars. The Budd cars simply lasted longer due to construction technique and stainless steel materials used.

Sorry, but Amtrak had no heavyweights; not even any betterment cars. They took only lightweight equipment of four axel design. The only six axel cars were some great domes and Santa Fe Hi-Level Diners (ex El Cap).
A very few HW baggage Cars were inherited from PC/CR in NEC MofW service, mostly as on-rail storage sheds.
As for the E Units, all steam E's were formally retired by 1981, many were gone by 1975. A very few of the HEP E's were around until 1985.
The SDP40Fs started arriving in mid-1973 and they were all on the property by late-1974. The AZL Models heritage is as follows:
AMTK 214 E8A ex RF&P 1005 Never Renumbered Retired May 1975 AMTK 367 E8A ex AMTK 325 Renumbered May 1976 ex UPRR 926 Renumbered to AMTK 468 in 1977 Retired July 1981 Note: There was a previous AMTK 468 which was an E9B Unit ex UPRR 970B that was retired in 1975. AMTK 422 E9A ex UPRR 945 Retired July 1981 AMTK 424 E9A ex UPRR 947 Retired July 1981

The mix of cars and locos from this period is amazing. If you put these on a layout, folks would think you were out of your mind and know nothing about railroading. Here is just one example. Rob

Mark Mark, At one point fairly early in its existence, Amtrak published a stipulation that all equipment that was owned by other railroads and/or privately owned and would be operated as part of the consist of an Amtrak train, was to be painted in an Amtrak Striped Paint Scheme to better "blend-in" with Amtrak equipment. Many, but not all, railroads complied and many PV owners complied. The edict was relatively, quickly (within a year or two) and quietly dropped. You can find quite a few photo examples of privately or contract carrier (host railroad) owned equipment so painted. My earlier answer was specific to Amtrak owned equipment.
