In the real thing, what did it mean? What was their purpose?

Yes that is correct. The original GN F3s had the tall fans as was common. Our release portrays a later update of the F3s where they got the same flat fans as the F7s.
The paintscheme is also not the original one, but a simplified scheme adopted in 1962 by Great Northern.
Usually we stick to the delivery paint scheme, but this time (or back in 2015) we chose a mid life paintscheme with updated fans as well.
