While we are waiting that Dirk returns to work, there is some exciting news coming from Karl Sinn`s Z-Spur Atelier. He is building a modular layout which first module is supposed to be ready by end of October! I could convince Karl to allow us a little preview. The topic is hot for our fans of Western Pacific - it is a fully functional car float named Niles Junction. Here is a drawing of module one (done by Dirk Kuhlmann): For all of us, who are at the same stage of building their layouts, have a look here - that`s how the pro is playing it: And he is moving quickly: More to come during the week! Best, Sven

What's the turnout brand? Fast Tracks? Dom Karl builds this layout with Märklin track material. However, the switches from Märklin are not reliable enough, therefore he is using custom made ones from a track building expert named Weichen Walter (Link: www.weichen-walter.de ). Best, Sven

The work on the layout by Karl Sinn is progressing nicely. Jens Wimmel, who runs the ZettZeit Webpage www.zettzeit.ch/aktuell.html , put one of the pictures by Karl Sinn up as the picture of the month: In addition, the layout will be presented in October to the public the first time at a very special exhibition in Bauma, Switzerland, which has a very high reputation at European Model Railroaders ( . Here are a few more pictures to give you a better feeling for the layout: Question now to you - What kind of WP rolling stock would you suggest/recommend to put on the layout ?? Thank you! Best, Sven

Hi Sven, I would go mixed train, the scenery or better the cars look like 60' or early 70'. So WP was heavy on boxcars, 40', 50', I could put some drop bottom gondolas, covered hopper, open hopper and flatcars in too. Bay window caboose at the end. Even stock cars were used at the time. ACF centrelows were emerging too. So lots of choice, you can't get it wrong

... I'm very interrested to see some weed within the track. Myself I'm planning that for the future..
Is there any drawback with locomotive's mecanism? Any need to protect gearings from underneath?

I think the mixed freight that Gerd stated is a good choice. I would like to see some early Diesel engines too.
Are you wanting a shirt consist? I think a shirt consist of 6 or 7 cars would look great. A couple weathered boxcars, gondola, maybe some form of tank car, and I really like the wooden reefers and cattle cars.

Dom Yes, Dom, you have to be very carefully with this. You have to make sure that even driving over it does not create loose parts which subsequently end up inside your locos. In our case the grass was planted in small bushels which then have been fixed three times and then cut to the right length (which means out of reach for wheels or cars) with a small nail scissor. Here is a zoom of the area. Since this is extremely time consuming I would not recommend it for a complete layout ; If you cannot build it that way protection is absolutely necessary. Best, Sven

Best, Sven Thank you for your input Sven. Indeed I plan to "plant" seed almost everywhere on my future layout, of course including track. I just don't know yet whether I use static grass / Grassinator or flocking but I already consider to protect all my locomotives' underneath gearing with a very thin styrene cover that would be put in place with a droplet of superglue from either side of the gearings on truck's cover. WM had gp7/9, gp35, gp38-2 and you could use a sd40-2 even though they used sd40s. WM has quite a few geeps, some were repainted to chessie system after the merger. I would go with a gp9 or gp35 for a short consist because of the broad range of years you can cover.
