I'm still amazed at this layout. That's a skill I'd love to have but I don't know where to start. I'll have to look into the German models. What do you mean by you have to look into the German models??

What do you mean by you have to look into the German models?? "Dirk is building the models by Kitbashing existing kits from mainly German producers such as Kibri, Lüttke, Saller and especially from Archistories and MBZ. I really recommend that you check out the MBZ web page!! Thomas Osswald has done a marvelous job and you can pick and choose from myriads of models >> . I give you three examples where you can see how Dirk is using bits and pieces from existing kits to build his unique model" I have heard of Archistories but I haven't bought any models from any of the above listed producers you mentioned. That's what I meant by German products. Read more: azlforum.com/thread/497/deal-island-chesapeake-bay-220?page=3#ixzz3i9GzqWqr

What did you do for the sky backdrop? For all the pictures taken during the construction period we have to use a "mobile setup", which you can see on the picture added: View AttachmentThe permanent setup will be a professional laser print which will be glued on the wooden background carrier. I will deliver more details once this task becomes due. Oh nicely done. I really like that a lot.

Next on our agenda are the trees. While we have used nearly all brands throughout the last twenty years and tested several techniques to build them from scratch, it is each time a very challenge task. Colors and size have to match the landscape. While at the more sandy beaches trees are an exception and bushes the rule, a little more into the inside of the island, trees have a dominating role in forming the three-dimensional aspects of landscape in combination with the island-typical huts and houses. In this picture we tested some trees of a new producer of handmade, very prototypical, real-sized trees, named Avantgarde Modellbau.

Does somebody know where we can get functional rail road crossings? Any recommendations? It is intended for the place below:

Try www.azatrax.com/ for a IR Crossing signal/gate controller. I don't know of anyone who makes a functional Z scale crossing signal/gate But I've seen a few people use the N scale N.J. International Crossing Gate/signals on their Z scale modules.

Here are two examples of the farm house complex (one built by Dirk, one built by Karl):

Just wanted to share an update on the tree planting activities with you. Heavy work is put behind the generation of conifers. Although we had some good experience with spruces on the previous layouts, (have a closer look at the conifers) we cannot use them on this layout - they are too dark green and do not fit into the shore side character of Deal Island. Pine trees are the correct trees for our landscape - mixed with beech, oak, alder and birch trees. We calculated that we would need about 40 pine trees and about 20 deciduous trees. Given that amount, Dirk decided to built them from scratch. I will provide you with insider pictures soon.

Sven I have the Micron Art signals on my short list of things to get but No I haven't tried them yet. I just got the MA-1011 Metal Foundry plus a bunch of their Scratch building Frets last week. While I haven't built any of the kits yet I have used their scratch building supplies and am very happy with the quality and details in their brass frets.
I have had some success with adding LED's to Train Cats signals but unfortunately no one seams to have them in stock and their order direct web page has bin gone for quite some time now.
