I have a lot of questions Sven but I'll space them out. How do you achieve the realistic water effect? I have never seen anyone pull off such realistic scenery. I have to look several times to make sure I'm not looking at the real thing. Yes, Dr. R, as Aaron asks, how did you get the water effect? I offer a couple of different brands and wanted to know if it was one of these. This is truly amazing work you have done. Thanks! Hi Frank, From the commercially available solutions, best experience could be made with the water by the company Noch, www.noch.de, (have a look here: . Karl Sinn has used it on the "Trollfjord" layout and had some spectacular light/sun reflection effects with it. This effect is difficult to capture in a picture and nearly impossible to describe - at least for me -, therefore I download a few pictures here for you. Please zoom in: Do you see the heron hunting for fish? The only "little" downside I am aware of is that the Noch water stays deformable for a very long time. In our case we put a brass ship on the water and it started to sink. Given the large amount of water necessary for The Chesapeake Bay layout, Dirk uses a different technique that had been described before for larger scale layout. Namely, the substance of the waves/water is formed by wood-chip wallpaper, which is then colored wet-in-wet by separated layers of dispersion colors (black, brown, blue and green). After the color dried out, a minimum of three layers of clearcoat is applied. Please carefully watch out that no dust or dirt is in the air when you apply the clearcoat, because even smallest pollutions destroy the water effect.

I have a lot of questions Sven but I'll space them out. Are any of the models on your layout kits or are they scratch built? How do you do the weathering on the models? Hi Aaron, Dirk is building the models by Kitbashing existing kits from mainly German producers such as Kibri, Lüttke, Saller and especially from Archistories and MBZ. I really recommend that you check out the MBZ web page!! Thomas Osswald has done a marvelous job and you can pick and choose from myriads of models >> . I give you three examples where you can see how Dirk is using bits and pieces from existing kits to build his unique model: 1) 2) 3) Dirk is using a mixture of matt paints according to his own recipe to do the basic weathering. The final touch is then achieved with some dry colors which are applied exactly at the point. Does that help you with your construction work on your layout? Best, Sven

We have worked on the water again and now the clearcoat layers have been successfully applied. The water really looks like a lot of water, the colors turn out to be correctly chosen and, yes, there is now the impression generated of a big bay with sea water. Have a look and zoom in:

In the late 70ties most of the passenger trains were handled by Amtrak. This holds true, too, for the Chessie System world. Therefore, we gave some of the Amtrak models a chance to present themselves. By coincidence Freudenreich announced the relaunch of his F40PH ( >> fr-model.eshop.t-online.de/epages/Shop46559.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Shop46559/Categories/Service ), which really makes a good figure in front of the most recent Amtrak commuter train. I attach a selection of three pictures in order to give you a first impression;

Thank you for requesting, Jeff, here are the full Amtrak train pictures as well. Please zoom in: and yes, there are other Amtrak engines, but I would like to see AZL`s F3s here as well or an Alco PA1 ;-)

it is really again and again astonishing how well cars can be placed on that pier. Let me know what your favorite would be! ...and we will try to make that happen ;-) All pictures can be enlarged, so once opened click on plus to enlarge them to the max. I found amazing details that way. Enjoy! Best, Sven

Hi Dom, Rob said that he would like to publish the layout in his Z-track journal once it is completely finished. Although Dirk and I are nearly working 24/7 on it, it most likely will not be fully completed before year`s end. We plan to show it at the biannually Z-scale convention in Altenbeken in April 2016. May be you could come and have a look at it with your own eyes? I attach a flyer for your information. I have unfortunately no contacts with the model railroader. If you or somebody else has contacts with them and could help us on this, this would be great. It would be a big honor for us to see it published in the No. 1 journal. Thank you! Best, Sven

I'm still amazed at this layout. That's a skill I'd love to have but I don't know where to start. I'll have to look into the German models.

Thank you for the flyer Sven. Definitly worth trying to come there next year! As of MR, I'm a subscriber but I've no entries with them. However, a friend of mine, a "stinkin' cheese eater" from France, JB Merillot (who just had his layout depicted in Ztrack), has submitted his layout to MR. As a result he has signed a deal with them and will likely be published in a close future. Dom

It would be really great if you could introduce me to him! To those who do not know JBM, please have a look at JBM`s marvelous web page " www.ztrain.eu/en/train-z-scale-echelle-220.php ". In addition, please take a look at his "making of" pictures, because some of his techniques e.g. the shell for the mountains we don`t use here in our layout but they may be important to know for you. Best, Sven

Thank you, Aaron, here are some "Work at the Pier" pictures for you. Please note the light weathering of the concrete layer on the pier.............. Best, Sven

What did you do for the sky backdrop? For all the pictures taken during the construction period we have to use a "mobile setup", which you can see on the picture added: The permanent setup will be a professional laser print which will be glued on the wooden background carrier. I will deliver more details once this task becomes due.
