I think you would lose the realism using the lighted signs simply because they don't look real. I disagree a little bit. Its normal this days to see a lot neon sign in businesses this days. What you don't want is to over use it, and make it look like Las Vegas. Also, I like what Townbuilder series did with their pizza and Chinese food take out building. I thought the backlit sign was great.

Judging by the cars and previous conversations he's modeling the 1940s and 1950s so the neons fit in but the signs just don't look good in modeling because they aren't neon signs. They are very cool but in my opinion on this layout they would be a mistake.

You are right Aaron, I lost track of the time period.

Should actually open a new thread for Niles Junction. I don't think this will end up in the 40s or 50s, because some rolling stock and locos will not.

Interesting point, Gerd, right now I have the feeling the cars Karl is using is defining the period as the 50ties/early 60ties. But the Trucks are not, or? I am a little bit confused now........ But if he would use other cars then he would need to use other billboards as well - correct? Best, Sven

The problem is the Showcase miniature trucks don't belong with the cars, unless you are having a vintage car show.

Maybe you make things interchangeable, running F7 and GP7/9 with those cars (remove those trucks), have 60/70 cars with proper locos and rolling stock and may run UP as 90 or so. Matching adds and billboards of course, maybe some structures easy to remove

....... I already consider to protect all my locomotives' underneath gearing with a very thin styrene cover that would be put in place with a droplet of superglue from either side of the gearings on truck's cover. Dom That is a very interesting approach, Dom, Please let me know how it works. Best, Sven I'll let you know, Sven. First I'll try this concept on "naked" track, then with a few inches of static grass / flocking on test track (maybe I'll simply do that on my current test layout... ). Dom
