I am working on a new layout in a spare bedroom. It is about 10'X6' and depicts the Columbia River Gorge. The focus is the Wishram area and hills separate that portion from the other side which is staging/Vancouver/Pasco. There is also a reverse loop to turn trains around. I am starting on the scenery and have most of the hills in as well as the frame work for the tunnel east of the Wishram yard. I am using an NCE PowerCab with a booster and I have hooked up a MRC sound box. Here are a couple of pics. John

Excellent John! It is looking very good! I love the yard leads that go into the curved tracks of the yard. It is an excellent look! I can't wait to see the layout progress. Keep us posted!

Whatever your reply in Trainboard, I would appreciate a trackplan when you have completed your layout! Congratulations for your work!

One thing I see as an improvment... In your last post, the 3rd picture down... Change the switch going into the reversing loop into a X, as well as the last yard switch Before the main line. Add strait track between and wire them to where you can switch cars ithout having to use the main line. The IRL example is in the Cheyenne West Yard. They use a SD-30 for switching as well... Also, the long lead going from the 4th photo and ending in the area of the reverse loop... What's the reason for this track? Maybe tie it back into the reverse loop as well. Or you could have it run under the mtn and back to the other side of the main line... Or both Just ideas. Ben S

Thanks for the comments and ideas. I am still looking at options for the reverse loop. Trains being turned around in one direction need to be backed onto the loop and I ran it off the mainline to minimize derailments backing up.

Very nice. I am usually a fan of small layouts, but wow, does this show how great a yard and long mains can look in Z!

for the second reversing loop, the industrial area on pic 4 could be added to to complete the other reversing loop. Depending on the industry, you could show the track going into a building, then have a board drawn/painted to match the scene. On the other side, you could show a overpass for a roadway or something.

I'm still looking at where to locate the reverse loop - thanks for the suggestions. I started some scenery - I haven't done water before, so it should be interesting. John

John, the secret with water is the blending. I start by painting the water near the shore line the same color as the shore. I then move away with blues. I add a little black to the deepest areas. The key is to blend all of the colors while the paint is wet. You don't need much water. Just enough to keep the brush moving. After it dries and you are happy, apply gloss medium over the water to give it the shine and wet look.
I love the ballasted road bed rising along the water. What a great scene!
