No, nothing to do with bi-sexuality ! This is a RAILWAY forum, after all. Can any members help me with a question on my mind ? Ignoring “distributed power”, let’s just consider a simple “double-header” at the front; would an AC locomotive such as ES44AC or SD70Ace ( and the AC4400CW due next year ) be partnered with a DC locomotive of the SD70 series, and if so, which one would lead and control the other ? Does this or did this happen in practice, and if so, which railroads do/did so ? Any insight that fellow modellers can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I thought maybe you were gonna' tell us AC/DC the band was going on tour by train!

Yes they can be partnered with the disparate technologies, and it doesn't matter which is in the lead. I can tell you that BNSF and UP did this (mostly) with impunity, even from the early days of AC-traction, and still do. I know other roads around during that time did too, like SP, CNW, and BN. I would be extremely surprised if any railroad that rostered AC power did not do this, at least on occasion.
There were advantages to NOT doing this for sure, but it depended on the railroads and their power management policies. I can tell you that for example BN kept their SD70MAC's *mostly* together from what I saw, and then eventually BNSF followed that m.o., and added the AC4400's into that pool when they arrived. And BNSF still tends to try to keep AC power together for coal trains especially. But trust me, there are plenty of examples of this not being the case.
There are restrictions as to what the locomotives can do in these scenarios, mostly handled by the computers. This could mean de-rating horsepower on the DC units, among other things. Also I think there are more manual operating restrictions when running AC power with, say, an SD40-2, but it can still happen and does. The engineers just have to be aware of certain things they have to do when operating them together.

Thank you Doug for such a thorough insight and explanation. I will now happily combine my UP and SP power in this way.

I thought maybe you were gonna' tell us AC/DC the band was going on tour by train! Ha! I thought the same thing, something related to the rock group. I grew up wearing out "Who Made Who" on my car stereo. (and eventually others..."Back in Black" of course and "The Razors' Edge" dropped my senior year.) One of my favorite railroad photographers often uses AC/DC as the backdrop for his photo montages he posts on FB. (not sure how he gets away with it, but he does...thinking he may have a connection to the band somehow and actually has rights) Honestly, I had never heard AC/DC used in that other context. And trust me I'm well-versed on the vocabulary associated with the various lifestyle choices, just never heard that somehow. I guess I need to be clear with my answer if someone asks me if I'm a fan of AC/DC....
