Thanks for all the advice. I thought you might like to know that I also have a small T scale layout. This, as you know, is less than half the size of Z scale i.e. 1:450 with 3 mm gauge track. Here is my small layout with a British Intercity HST 125 9 car train:
I recently had a motor go out in one of the power cars. fortunately the good people at Tgauge.com in Scotland did not think it was my fault (unlike some others) and sent me a new motor F.O.C. Here is a thread about how to install this TINY motor. Now that is small..including the gear box.

Not too bad for someone who only knows how to "mess around with small locomotive". Its running just fine.
