I never followed the SD 40-2 forum much .So maybe l missed something. I was just waiting for the release of the Chessie System. After ordering it with C&O ortner hoppers . I received mine yesterday. Nice locomotive, except I seen no ditch lights as described in info that described what Chessie SD 40-2 engines came with. šµāš«šµ Why did they say ditch lights and not have them?

Probably just a typo.
They don't appear to have ditchlights in any photos of the model I've seen.
More to the point, these locos wouldn't have had ditchlights in real life. There could have been an exception or two that made it to the mid/late 90's without being repainted to CSX, dunno. But this would be an enormous anomaly if so. As delivered, the Chessie SD40-2's did not have ditchlights as that wasn't really even a thing at that point.
If you look at the artwork that Hans released, it does indicate some roads having ditchlights and most not. Artwork is certainly not always a 100% indicator but it's at least a good place to start.

I think Rob just reuses text between different road releases of the same loco run. It gives a breakdown of all of the details available, but not necessarily on every loco of that model.

While I didn't look through every single release, at least a couple of them have detail lists specific to the model. So I don't think having it listed was intentional.
Either way, the good news is that the model was configured correctly per the prototype.

Chessie System has been written off in 1986. To that date in the USA, ditch lights were not yet implemented. On another hand, as of 2024, BNSF and UP are still using broad numbers of SD40-2 and of course all these units are equipped with ditchlights. However, looks like samples of these railroads released by AZL don't have any of these.

The UP version that AZL did on the first run is a much earlier era of UP's locomotive. So it would not have had the ditchlights either.
The BNSF should have ditchlights, and I believe the artwork indicated as such. The Swoosh version they are doing didn't get applied to the SD40-2 until sometime around 2006, so well after the federal mandate for ditchlights. (1997 I believe?) The only unfortunate part of the artwork (that I just now noticed) is they also have the Remote Control Locomotive warning labeling and corresponding road numbers. So they're mostly only good for 2012 and beyond as yard power, even if you did want the Swoosh. Seems like an EXTREMELY specific locomotive scheme choice when they could have at least gone generic enough that it could serve potential sales for 7-8 additional years of era.

Even though itās just the road number, Iām still disappointed one of the CSX road numbers wasnāt 8888. It would have been easy and something different to do. It could have even have been āpromotedā as a limited run. You can get it in HO. www.bradleydcc.com/athearn-csx-sd40-2-8888-crazy-eights.html

I don't model CSX but would have purchased a Crazy Eights because of the "incident" and being made famous in the movie "Unstoppable" (very good movie BTW) starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Early in the announcement for the production of the SD 40-2 I asked that the 8888 would be included but I guess I didn't squeak loud enough... too bad, probably would have increased sales!

I completely agree. I would expect quite a few sales even to those who donāt model CSX, especially if it was branded as a limited production. I suggested it early-on, too, but to no avail. ā¹ļø Why not do a locomotive road number with an interesting story? locomotive.fandom.com/wiki/CSX_8888_(Crazy_Eights)_Incident
