I have 5 SD75 engines in my fleet, but one of them runs very poorly. Of the 5, it is the slowest and it squeaks. I was wondering if there was a way to convert this engine from a powered unit to a non-powered unit? I've had it apart and been looking at it, but can't see how to remove the gearing and keep the wheels in place? Does anyone have any idea how I might accomplish this?

The first release of the SD70/75 are known to be slow runners. They have double bearings on the trucks. The fix is to remove the inner bearing.

I'm not sure but I think this one was released at the same time as the others. In fact I'm sure of it. But it is the slowest of the 5. I don't know if it is worth sending back to AZL for repair or adjustment. There is probably nothing that can be done with it anyway. As Rob or Hans pointed out one time, no two engines run exactly the same and since all 5 of my SD75's run at different speeds, that kinda says it all right there.

I'm not sure if removing the inner bearing would solve the speed problem. It might, and then again it might not. Now if there was a way to remove the gearing and motor and just turn it into a non-runner dummy that would be terrific because I would like to run some long trains with a slave engine in the middle or at the end and at present, I can't do that with the engines I have because they all run at different speeds. NO I am not switching to DCC. If I had a dummy engine though, I could place it anywhere on my container train or grain train and it would look like the real McCoy. Perhaps in the future, AZL could produce some non-powered units for just such a purpose. What do you think Hans?

Willy, Re: Now if there was a way to remove the gearing and motor and just turn it into a non-runner dummy that would be terrific I can do that for you as a service. Do you wish to retain any lighting in the loco? Or........just a plain dummy? You can contact me off-forum if you would like to have more detail on this. Also, if you are running Kadee couplers and wish to run the dummy mid-pack or as a trailer, it'll be a good idea to have the same couplers. Don donfedjur@aol.com

All you have to do is remove the motor and worm gears. The trucks will free roll. The chassis comes apart easily and the motor will pop out without an issue. Badabing badaboom you've got a dummy.
