Hi all, I know there's a lot of folks on here that are trying to "push the envelope" as far as z scale goes, especially in the custom paint, decal, and weathering department. I just wanted to create a thread to share photos of some of the projects everyone's been working on as well as tips and tricks for painting and weathering. I'll get the ball rolling with a couple of cars I just finished recently: the first image is a custom painted and lettered B&O drop end gondola, and the second is a stock mtl penn central boxcar that I used an oil paint streaking technique on to simulate rust and then dusted over with gray and earth brown on edges of the car. Both cars have had metal wheels added. Attachments:

Those look great, as a Chessie modeler myself Iβve been trying to find Chessie decals but have came up empty. Do you happen to have a source?

Along that same line of thought -- what do folks do to remove factory lettering (AZL specifically, in my case) from Z scale models, without disturbing the underlying paint? The usual tricks in other scales include Micro Sol, Walthers Solvaset, Mr. Color Thinner (for Kato), IPA (use carefully), and even gentle scraping with a sharp/curved blade.
It is typically a YMMV, and I imagine no different for Z, but I was just hoping to find some options known to work before I go experimenting.
In my case, I have the AZL BNSF reefers w.the swoosh logo, but it should be the circle-cross on some numbers. I think I have some N decals that will serve for Z.
TIA, Ed

TIA, Ed Ed, there is some YMMV involved, but a large portion of the AZL catalog can be altered using the Micro-Sol and scotch tape method. (sometime nudging with a q-tip or toothpick at times) See azlforum.com/post/30049 which includes another link to a thread where I have expounded on this process in some depth. (I should probably just create a main thread about this...I'll try to do that soon.) But yes those beer cars (technically insulated boxcars) are among the cars that work great with Micro-Sol. PM me if you have any others...I've altered quite a few of AZL's offerings. A couple of exceptions off the top of my head... the ACF 2-Bay Covered Hoppers are very sensitive to Micro-Sol and if you go more than about three minutes it will remove paint. And some cars are toughter than others. Some of the PS2-CD's are really tough or impossible to alter, using normal methods at least. Also some of the 3-Bay ACF's. Aside from AZL...Full Throttle lettering is almost impossible to remove without affecting the underlying paint, and MTL is also very tough to remove...use Camp Fuel instead of Micro-Sol on MTL stuff, and it will take much longer to "soak" and multiple applications. I basically won't even try Full Throttle stuff anymore.
