I liked the way some of my 3D printed track ties came out in Z scale, so I decided to put together a quick little diorama to see what it might look like in a finished scene. This track has code 40 rail and concrete ties, and the ballast is AZRM sifted to a #80 screen. The track is glued onto some N scale 1/8" cork roadbed, which seems passable for modern mainline track (no too high). I passed on using any static grass, as I thought it might look a little out of scale for Z (besides, ground foam is a lot faster). Nothing is weathered here, and it could use some more lineside detail. I'm thinking perhaps the cars could be lowered a bit, and converted to MT TSC couplers in 3D printed pockets. IDK whether all Z wheels would be happy on code 40 track, but these seem to roll OK (the Railbox is MT and the BNSF is AZL).
Thanks for looking!

Ednadolski,
Thank you. Most inspiring!
These are the sort of photos we should all be uploading.
Second one down is best photo, composition-wise.
Sifted ballast for Z scale—The AZLer here is a true model maker. Colors in the terrain … All well done!
Since its creator said nothing of the skyboard, neither will I.
Not necessary all AZL rolling stock, but 50- and 50-plus- foot boxcars are choice eye candy and ample for simplicity.
Deciduous trees inclusion is pleasing.
Excellent choice in fascia color. Excellent choice in fascia texture! (Nooks and crannies suggest underground cutaway.)
Again, … Most inspiring!
Ednadolski—With great appreciation,
Scott
(PS: Now, how do ya do that thumbs up thing?)

So impressive, it’s depressing - almost makes me want to give up, comparing it with my own poor efforts !

Oh man this looks fantastic! Certainly going to use these as a reference when I get to doing scenery myself.

Looks really like it did in the early 90's when you could guess from the plume of sooty smoke wheter Santa Fe or EsPee grumbled up the Loop.... You really nailed that Tehachapi Flair.. Congrats👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 BR Boris

Just to see what a string of Z scale cars looks like on a 22" radius curve .... Ed

About the same as a 30" radius in N scale. Of course, a 30" radius in Z scale would be just about right for a 10-degree curve on the prototype (Hmm, choices, choices, ...) Ed
