Mind me creating the thread for this? (Didn’t see one posted, an’ I got somethin’ to day.) …
Sunuva *&#$%@!!
Bought a four-car set and a single of forty-foot PFE reefers (R-30-18s[?] aka ice bunkers) during lockdown. (I wuz goin’ for the 1953 look.) Black-and-white photos show these cars pooled together by an ice house or at the tail end of a train right before the caboose. Often photos show them bunched together in a yard (not surprisingly)—A big reason why I went for a four-car set.
There’s different UP/SP logo or herald configurations. I remember researching that. Of course, AZL delivered historical accuracy.
I went for the 60013-60014-60041-60043, the first four-car set, and I went for the first single. They’re super-handsome cars, and AZL’s reefer orange is nicely subtle and classy.
Now then, … Can’t AZL spin the wheel so the ticker stops on BOGO SD45 (My way for Week Six?)?!

Yes, we do mind. You are creating confusion on the forum.
AZL just released a PFE Reefer special for Week 5 and the ATSF SD40-2.

First, I want to compliment AZL for the gorgeous PFE reefers. The detail is absolutely amazing and will be a great addition to my railroad. And as modelers often say, “It's your railroad, so do what you want.” With that said, I am more of a Santa Fe modeler (love the GP-7s) so I need to acquire some SP or UP motive power. This got me into a search for what era these reefers are from. Do I need a steam locomotive or a diesel? That set me on a search for PFE paint schemes of different eras. The following website seemed to have the best breakdown of the various paint schemes: jbritton.pennsyrr.com/index.php/tpm/442-interchange-pacific-fruit-expressThe numbers of the AZL set (6xxxx) are rebuilt from R-30-12 to -14. [Number series shared with R-40-18 rebuilds.]. This sets the earliest date as 1940 for this series. The railroad medallions place it in the 1946 to 1950 range as the Union Pacific medallion changed to black and white and hardware was no longer black. I am sure it took some time after 1950 to repaint all of the cars so it could be a post-1950 look. That said, the wording between the medallions was “VENTILATED REFRIGERATOR,” not “REFRIGERATOR,” and there were stripes on the reporting mark area. So at the risk of being a nitpicker, could I get a little more information on the prototypes for the AZL models?
