Question for Hans and the 2 Robs:
Will AZL ever offer or make Undecorated locomotives or loco. shells?
ie. GP 38, SD40-2, etc. or other EMD loco's (GP35/GP40) to be released in the future?
If offered, it would be nice to have these with removable DB/non-DB blisters. This gives the modeler optionality in portraying the prototype as needed.
Thanks

They did undec GP 38’s and sold out . It would be nice if they did it again ,but I don’t see it happening. Some while back in the forum they wrote it wasn’t cost effective, if I remember correctly.

Still true. We get zero cost reduction from the factory for undecorated. I suggest you simply paint over the road name you like the least.

Yes, no savings on ordering undec´s from our factory. No unwillingness on our part, but with all our locomotive options, undec´s really cannot meet most modellers expectations. The only exception is our old GP38 that we may do another undec run at one point.

I just find a locomotive that's close to the color I want and re-paint it. I got some of the original undecorated GP-38s. They were easier to paint, but there really wasn't much of a difference.

Hans/Rob,
Thank You for the feedback.
I can do the strip and repaint route as I've done many N and HO models the same way.
It would be interesting to see if Undecorated could be offered in the future if Z Scale continues to grow.
Atlas, Kato and IMT continue to sell N and HO Undecorated locomotives.

I work in the model RR industry and can attest to the fact that there are no cost savings with undecs. Factories don't really like doing them because it interrupts the production flow, and the quantities are usually very small. I've custom painted for a long time and used to lament undecs not being available, now I understand. I strip and paint my own. I'm fortunate to be able to design and print my own decals. That said, I don't mind that Hans hinted at a run of undec GP38s. (Next up is a GP38 in NYS&W Yellowjacket!) Attachments:
