Another question, are we going to be able to tell the difference between an SD50 and the base model SD60 in z scale?

Another question, are we going to be able to tell the difference between an SD50 and the base model SD60 in z scale? The engine access doors are different and so are the anti-climbers among a few other differences. The average buyer may not see the details, but you add twice as many road schemes.

Another question, are we going to be able to tell the difference between an SD50 and the base model SD60 in z scale? The question is, can you tell the difference on the prototype? I don't have a clue what AZL's plans are. I don't think they've released artwork for these yet. Since they're not bothering to do the two-window SD60M's, I would imagine that they are also not doing separate tooling for the SD50s. But I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they did either.

My speculation here … Some subtle difference in spotting features gotta come to the tooling.
For locomotives, company integrity comes to the fore; that is, I really don’t thing AZL would blend the two any more than AZL would call an F3 an F7. … Just tossing twigs in the campfire here.
Judging by the PDFs (the artwork posts) and photo of limited editions, I’m not so sure SD50s and SD60S are going to be made available in the current year—Unless lots of locomotives are put in the rotation.

Actually all SD50, SD60 and SD60M locomotives are finishing up production and we will have the locomotives early to mid May. Overall, the 3 different locomotives share quite a bit of common parts, but the end product will be correct SD50s, SD60s and SD60Ms.

Sjl, did you want to tell us that the main spotting feature that distinguishes the SD50 from the SD60 is the number of latched doors under the radiator grills? The former has six while the latter has eight. Very subtle virtual sole difference, indeed!
further fun facts • SD50/SD60s were precisely 5-1/2 feet longer than SD45s. • SD50/SD60s were precisely 12-feet longer than GP38-2/GP40-2s. • SD50/SD60s were precisely 15-feet longer than GP30s.
A Seaboard SD50 and a B&O Chessie SD50, I look forward to seeing from AZL.
Also, from AZL, I look forward to seeing CSX SD60s in (non-yellow nose) Stealth paint scheme.

Hans' original post did say "Different Battery Box Doors," which I missed. It will be interesting to compare the UP SD50s with UP SD60s.

Sjl, did you just answer your own question?!
Battery box—I believe that is a roadname-specific differentiation. More universal is, I believe, the number of latched doors under the radiator.

You can take a look at the different drawings to spot differences between the SD50 and SD60. On the outside, it is basically rear maintenance doors and latches around battery and storage boxes in the Cabs. The SD60M has a rear mounted Brakewheel because of the Safety Cab. All in all there are not many outside differences between the SD50 and SD60. Most changes were internal, like improvements to the electrical system and an improved diesel engine.

Bless you, Hans. Also, thank you for the release date hints.
(Doug A, would you mind converting Han’s DOCX entitled “SD50 - 60 Variations” to PDF and posting that PDF?)

Sjl, after the time and energy put into our discussion, glad you were able to share with yourself the “Complete with helpful arrows! Thanks!” Doug A, disregard the requested favor, please. DOCX, for some, doesn’t double-click launch from the forum. Save link as DOCX (For Windows users, right-click DOCX link and select Save link as.) and open that way works for me. Six versus eight latched panel doors under radiator grills as indicated by drawings AND as aforementioned in forum. These doors affect the size and shape of rear maintenance doors as indicated by arrows in the drawings. Secondly, “coin slot” in battery box is indicated as a spotting feature. Lastly, and sans arrow, SD60 appears to have, on top, a distinct fan configuration. Scott Attachments:SD50 - 60 Variations.pdf (265.88 KB)

I am very much looking forward to the SD50/60/60M.
Forgive me if it was mentioned elsewhere, but I'm wondering about the minimum radius (both "advertised" minimum as well as "in the real world").
