Excellent news! In the (yet) tiny Z scale market I think cooperation is better than blind competition. However, one question: will the customer have the choice of coupler when he purchases one of these locomotives in brand-new conditions? Or, like in the "good old times", will he have to use a dremel and set by himself a new coupler box if he wants to shift to an AZL (or MTL) coupler?

We will have an official announcement soon, but AZL will release E8 and E9 units for the North American Market with our AutoLatch (MTL and Bowser compatible) couplers.
AZL is the OEM of the E8/E9 locomotives for Marklin. As such, the Marklin locomotives will be the first DCC ready Z scale locomotives that Marklin has ever released. The E units will be fully compatible with the Digitrax DZ123Z0 decoder. The Marklin units have a different truck and coupler. The only change to the truck was for a Marklin size coupler pocket. NOTE: if you prefer MTL couplers, it *might* be easier to buy the Marklin locomotive because the coupler pocket will work better with MTL replacement couplers. It's not in my financial interest to point this out, but at the end of the day, a happy customer is our goal, because we hope you will come back to us in the future for your Z scale needs and desires.
A few more details: the E8/E9 will be of our traditional split frame design, and feature a coreless motor (like all of our previously released locomotives) that is rated to 12 volts, so you can use N scale throttles. It is also geared to run slower than indigenous Marklin locomotives. It will be speed compatible with AZL and MTL locomotives, which we think gives a more realistic speed range and much better slow speed characteristics.
All in all, this is a HUGE leap for Marklin to embrace the philosophy of the North American Z market. We are exceptionally honored and humbled that Marklin has chosen AZL to embark on this new venture, and we hope it is the beginning of many cooperative projects to come in the future.
Best Regards, -Robert

Hi Scott,
I think 4th Quarter of 2014 is realistic for the E units.

I almost want to cry when I see those couplers on a beautiful engine like that. They are huge. N scale or Ho size

A question for Rob A. and for Hans: I was speaking of these future beasts on a french spoken forum these last days... I think I remember I read somewhere than AZL's units would be released circa next december. But I'm not able to find where. Any update for this model's release date? Dom

Rob With Marklin/AZL soon to announce the E8 in Southern Pacific Daylight colors can you tell me if TCS will have a 'drop in' DCC decoder and secondly will AZL come out with a set of passenger cars painted up in Daylight colors. I'd rather go with all new equipment as opposed to scrounging around Ebay and a couple of local Hobby Shops that seem to have the ability to find this older equipment. Thanks. ...don

AZL I have a quick question in regards to this product and the mtl coupler conversion you mentioned earlier will the marklin trucks be available as a replacement part i prefer supporting north Americas crap economy if it's an easier conversion with the marklin truck I could just purchase one separately and just do the conversion that way rather then put my money into Europe for the whole locomotive thanks in advance
