Today is the anniversary of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in Britain. In 1825 it was the first train powered by a steam locomotive.
Think about it: if this event never happened, we'd all be modeling donkey carts!

The first was in 1804 in South Wales between Penydarren (Merthyr Tydfil ) and the Glamorganshire canal basin at Abercynon, a distance if about 12 miles. The locomotive was designed by Richard Trevithick, a Cornish mining engineer. It hauled 10 tons and 70 fare-paying passengers. A replica loco is in the transport section of the National Museum of Wales at Swansea, and is steamed on occasion.
