Another short passenger car I designed and printed is this coach: I've also designed a full-size version, but until I have more layout space I won't print one. More pictures will be coming soon.

I decided as to test my skills a bit more by making a caboose. After a two-piece print turned out not so great, I chose to break it into three pieces: a base, a body, and a roof. My first test print had the cupola centered; I changed that in the final design. It's a simple design, to be sure, but I can modify it easily if I want by adding side windows. The first picture shows the first three-piece print, while the second shows the pieces assembled and painted. Tomorrow I'll post what the finished caboose looks like on the track.

I agree, very nice. I don't know enough about 3D printing but I do have a question, "Can you print the windows/doors void of any material so that etched brass/stainless inserts could be applied?"

Whoa, that turned out great! We could use those in Z for sure!
Nice work!

Thanks for the compliments, everyone! To answer this and the other question, I had to print all three pieces with 100% infill to give the caboose some weight. The windows and doors were created in the design process using "hole shapes." It's a way of cutting a space into a solid shape, for example to allow pieces to fit together with pegs and holes, or in this case to create openings to be windows and doors. If anyone would like, I can make a screen-shot of what that looks like as a design to help you understand the concept better. As promised, here's what the final caboose looks like:

Here's what the body design looks like in Tinkercad, the program I use to make my 3d prints: The two openings are "hole cubes" that cut openings in the side when the file is printed. All I have to do is paint around such window holes. The same is true in the design process for the railings and the ladder. They're either rectangular shapes with openings cut into them, or they're sized to long and narrow objects. Let me know if you'd like more information about how I undertake this process, or how to design and print 3d objects. I'm not an expert, but I really enjoy this part of the hobby and I'd like to share with anyone else who's curious.

Wow, put a Mopac decal on that caboose, and your golden!
Very nice, and we need this in Z-scale!

Wow, put a Mopac decal on that caboose, and your golden! Very nice, and we need this in Z-scale! It could also work for Santa Fe, or for the Katy when they painted everything red. I wanted a generic red color that would go with other railroads. Still pondering doing a brown one...

Here are two more short passenger cars I've printed & painted, a smooth-side sleeper and a streamlined sleeper: I won't be making any more prints for a while as I'm going to be building a new small layout. That also means I won't be making a video this month. I'm hoping to shoot the process of making the new layout, posting clips to TikTok, then combining them all into a YouTube video (or a few videos).
