Well, its is an A B A EMD F7 set. I found images of them pulling both freight and passenger cars, but mostly passenger cars.

I purchased one in the spring. I have to say it's now one of my favourite locos.
It was a rocky start. It came from Ebay Spain as a new item. There are a number of sellers on Ebay Spain that actually run model shops and use Ebay as their web presence. When it arrived only one end loco drove. The functioning end dragging the faulty end around the track. The seller wasn't initially very helpful, stating he didn't accept refunds. Refunds on a second-hand used Ebay item are one thing but this was sold as new so I just sent it back. Nothing happened until I complained thought the PayPal system and suddenly the seller took a lot more notice. It was worth his while too as I've since purchased more from him.
Anyway the replacement finally arrived and It's a great loco. It's noisy. With a whine that is actually quite satisfying though whether it's prototypical is questionable. It also is a bit slow to take off with one end loco sometimes pulling the other to get it going. I don't think my second one is faulty it's more a design quirk.
I too couldn't say if it's a freight or passenger loco and there's not a lot of info. out there. I will say it looks equally in place pulling passenger cars or coal so maybe save your cash and use some existing rolling stock. Either way it's highly recommended and will be a great addition to any collection.

The F7s can be used as either a freight or passenger locomotive. Just about every prototype freight car Märklin models is appropriate. 40 and 50 foot boxcars would have been the most common along with tank cars. Märklin passenger cars in general also work. However I don't recall them producing any that match with these locomotiives.
