Here, in Roseville, California, there are several Tier-4 locos but still quite a lot of very old units too. The 1 per hour Roseville-North line (Seattle, Portland, Idaho, Feather river runs have noticeable consists, most likely based on Performance so you will see some relatively ‘newer’ units and some with near junk, especially the short line train.

The idea is not new ... The French "PLM" (Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée) had already battery powered locos and German railways ran battery powered railcars ... even before WW-I ! And there were the locos for mining. On the other side everybody speaks about battery powered cars : the first car running faster than the mythic "100 km per hour" was a Belgian prototype, lead battery powered ... in 1899 ! So one can see that we "invent" battery powered vehicles ... AGAIN !

The idea isn't new, but the technology and process and infrastructure surrounding it are, such that the invention becomes practical and usable. Unfortunately, we still haven't gotten to the point where building the devices (namely the battery) is cost-effective...both from an ecological and financial standpoint. But, it's progress. Some estimate that we will be "there" in 10-20 years.
