News Flash! Golden State sets are now sold out… A/B engine sets are available. It is still possible to assemble a six car set. Contact for pricing/availability of “A only” set! Rory last set finally sold. Dealer had a July 4 sale 10% off .I almost bought it but passed . It’s gone this morning. I’m getting to the point were I’m rethinking going to different scale . I’ll keep my east coast of favorites but sell off a lot west coast collection. My three railroad s that I really want to model have a better selection in all other scales. AZL is limited or don’t want to produce some locomotives or road names. Seems there stuck in passenger train production mode . Which that’s there choice.

In fact it seems that AZL models mainly passenger and "modern" freight cars (after 1970). It seems also that many modellers are mainly interested in running long "modern" trains (Amtrak ? ) pulled by several engines. But for more "classic" freight cars You can still buy at MTL, FT, Father Nature and so on. Look at ZScale Monster (in USA) for example. For myself I model Massachusetts in 1965 and most of my freight cars come from these manufacturers (look for the beautiful "Susie" ) ... And take a glance at the Bay. On the other hand my whole passenger (commuter) service is provided by the (AZL ! ) railcar.

I have all what they offered except E 7 locomotives. As for MTL and Full Throttle I buy what comes available. The only Western Maryland was MTL F 7. In any modern locomotives don’t ask for fantasy paint schemes (which other scales have no problem making). Plus Hans is not a fan of Baldwin so we’ll never see that loco. I luv how far z scale has come but it’s not really working for my East Coast railroad’s.

As for AZL alco RS-3 little excited maybe possible Western Maryland but can’t even get a answer on that in the second run on them. God only knows when that will happen too.

First I wanted to model the ATSF or UP, but the Budds were not yet available 2017 ; so I chose the NYC and NH, it is not impossible that there were trackage rights. Finally I am happy with that choice, it gave me the opportunity to model a "greener" and less "desertic" landscape (beep-beep ). And I am waiting for my "beloved" PA-1 in NH black-white-orange (without B unit, I saw that all the way the NH had none) which should come at end of summer ( ? ).

Thanks Bob. I got every SKU of the “Golden State.” I’m OK with AZL ….because I like long passenger trains. Hans and Rob can do no wrong in my book.
To me, z scale sucked when everything was in briefcases.
Plus, since they are so small… I can pass them off as cheaper….

I agree! Saw a suitcase layout at Train Day in Ashland, VA a few years ago & the guy was running a single Marklin loco on it so fast it looked like a whirling dervish! Passerbys were laughing. He made Z scale look like a toy.

Can some of the experts please let me know what else pulled the train? Which SP steam can be used? Do you have pictures, please? I found this on Wikipedia: Dieselization began on the Rock Island immediately post-war with A-B and A-B-B sets of EMD E6, E7, E8 and sometimes even Alco DL units being assigned to the train. Later, A-B-A sets and even some FP7 units became more common. In 1947 Southern Pacific bought three 6,000 hp (4.47 MW) A-B-B sets of EMD E7 units in the vermilion and silver (aluminum) colors. These red and silver Southern Pacific E7s were repainted to the familiar “Daylight” scheme (red, orange and black) in June 1949 before the Golden State even had received all its ordered lightweight cars which did not occur until June 1950. Until 1954, the Rock Island diesel units were painted in the original red, maroon and silver “Rocket” colors. In 1954 that changed to a simplified scheme without the red color, in 1958 to an even more simplified scheme featuring mostly a maroon front and silver rest and in the early 60's to an all maroon scheme, which by 1967 was enhanced with yellow wings at the front. By late 1953, Southern Pacific PA-1/PB-1 and PA-2/PB-2 units began joining the E7 units with pulling the Golden State, and in 1954 E9 units were added. By this time A-B-A sets became more common on the Southern Pacific, which could be either made up entirely of E7 or PA/PB units or mixed consists featuring E7, E9 and PA/PB units working together. All these Southern Pacific diesel units remained in the Daylight scheme until 1958 and 1959 when they were gradually repainted into the “Bloody Nose” scheme featuring a red nose and grey rest, which they kept until the very end. Also by 1960, F7 units started to appear pulling the Golden State for a limited time in the early '60s. Although the Golden State was officially declared a dieselized train by January 1948, the Southern Pacific regularly assigned GS-4 class 4-8-4 steam locomotives to pull the Golden State between Tucumcari, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas until late 1953. Due to diesel shortages on the Southern Pacific, which lasted until the mid '50s, steam helpers in form of GS class 4-8-4, MT class 4-8-2, SP class 4-10-2 and even AC class 4-8-8-2 and 2-8-8-4 steam locomotives were a common sight on the Golden State.I assume this GS3 from Lionel is "just a vison".
