Not sure I understand your question, but maybe you're asking if the existing supply of GP38s are using the latest chassis which is not susceptible to zinc pest ... if that's the question then YES. They purged all the "low numbers" 62512 (I'm guessing) down to 62501 (i'm sure of this) in August 2017 (I remember this date, as I found an email in my sent folder asking Rob K why 14 line items were suddenly pulled from availability that day) ... As you can see, they have the re-build program for users with old chassis and then going forward all NEW GP38s should use the latest chassis that won't crumble. Also, to get a response from AZL, read this post: azlforum.com/thread/631/azl-customer-support

You do still find the old ones on eBay, however, without any warning. I recently emailed Rob K about a CP loco, since there are two types out there, only one of which is potentially problematic I understand.

Certainly there are a lot of unknown locos out there. If it's on eBay from a non-authorized AZL dealer, ask the seller to demonstrate chassis soundness by removing the circuit board and re-installing - surefire way to detect which chassis you have! I would not buy a GP38-2 used from anyone unless it is sold as "new chassis" Any release post 2018 release or if an older model, it should have the 2020 or later chassis. Seems this list is in order of release (no dates supplied, but it makes sense to me) ... www.americanzline.com/locomotives/emd-gp38-2/my somewhat educated guess is that the cutoff is at the 62523 which were the first to have the new chassis style. Any loco listed ABOVE that 62523 is susceptible. Some lower numbers were rebuilt and those are listed near the bottom of that table with the -xR part number where R indicates "rebuilt."

I recently emailed Rob K about a CP loco, since there are two types out there, only one of which is potentially problematic I understand. Fortunately, I saved the dealer announcements and there's a clear visual note for the CP rail locomotives: 62505 is the "beaver" logo - that's the one with the defective chassis... (released September 2012) 62513 has the CP Rail italics lettering. That one has a good chassis. (released January 2017) Oddly enough, AZL used "62513" twice ... it was originally the undecorated GP38-2. But as I said - Jan 2017 it became a CP Rail GP38-2. Well, now you can buy your CP rail loco safely.

Since the list is sortable, I'm not sure that works. But if you don't mind going over to another dealer's web page, you can find some date information there: www.zscalemonster.com/azl/62500/ My understanding is that 2015 and later is safe, which fits with the 2015 date he shows for the G&W (the number you noted above).

But if you don't mind going over to another dealer's web page, you can find some date information there: While sortable, it defaults to release order and it works (see attachment screencap) AZL still sold the lower numbers with questionable chassis' until the date I mentioned above (August 2017) ... but the problem was not in the 2015 releases as you indicated and yep 62523 was the first.

Frank great information I appreciate that you posted it. Unfortunately, the GP38-2 is a gift that "keeps giving." The assumption in this discussion is that the shell (which is what the part number is based on) and the frame haven't been separated. I will assume that when RobK accepts a GP38-2 for ztrackresale, he checks the frame. Beyond than that on the resale market, one can't tell if the frame has been swapped, unintentionally or otherwise, or been rebuild by it's owner based on a model number.
The only way to tell, most of the time is to look under the hood. Even then not all the "problem" model numbers display the problem. I have a "problem unit" that has run well for years but I always keep in mind that the next time I run it, it may have rotted away.

Hey guys some points of clarity. We know of no dealers who still have stock of 1st generation GP38s. We stopped selling these a few years ago and dealers were able to clear out their inventory.
All locos we currently have listed are 2nd generation and newer (2020 chassis).
When we take in 1st generation GP38s, we inspect the chassis. If it is degraded we talk to the owner about performing the upgrade. We did this with an ATSF GP38 that came in a few weeks ago. We will list on Ztrack Resale if the upgrade has happened.
Yup we slipped up and used 62513 twice. We also slipped up and used 62523 twice - Shortline Railroad (G&W) and Frisco. The list above is missing a few road names. Here is the list form the AZL main site:

Thank you guys (including Rob, latest above message) for your clarification. Myself I've no plans to purchase one of these models on the "used" market (ebay, etc), as I'm very happy with what is available on official websites such as AZL Direct or Z scale monster. Dom
