Ya know.. if he had done it in Z, a couple suitcases would have handled it all.

Something isn't quite right. Model Railroader reported the layout to be 23x124 feet (2852 sq ft).
By my calculations that's 9x50 feet in Z, or about 220 feet of Z-bend track modules. Big deal.

MRR? That was *how* long ago? Pretty sure Sir Rod works on his layout more than the rest of us.

What's wrong is the Sun story (what do you expect from Newscorp, facts?). The 23X124 foot layout I mention is from the earliest story of Rod's layout in 2007. Since then Rod has done additional stories in 2010, 2014 and 2017 about additions to his layout. There is no way what he's shipping back to England is just 1500 sqft. For that matter why would you need 7 shipping containers? Assuming 53 foot containers, that's nearly 3000 sqft of floor space.
If you want to see what can be done in 1500 sqft, check out RobA's layout in Model Railroader December 2007. And he's been busy since then too.
I don't have the numbers but 1500 sqft. seems to be about the size of the Z scale layouts at NTS, at least in Sacramento and Portland.
As far as being jealous, why? The only challenge in HO is finding the space to put it all.
If you haven't seen Rod's layout check out those issues of Model Railroader, it's impressive.

Anything bigger hardly ever travels arond the world. Biggest I have seen here in the Netherlands are 45ft ones.

I remember that layout was not all that large, it was the something like 50-100 yard attached to one wall that skews that SF number. It was a VERY dense railroad, sorta appropriate of the times in Pennsylvania. With all those tall buildings (and the money to build VERY good protection, I can rationalize several containers.
Funny note on the Sun page, last teaser: Rod calls the Radio to apparently correct the Jockey that "he" built the Layout where as the last MR and media he gave great claim to his long time collaborator building much of it (of course under likely the design of Rod).
Mickie and I gave him our BAZ BoyZ Club Car (BAZX) and the Shoreline show in Mountain View, CA Meet-n-greet. I told him when I read the 1st issue in 07 that was a jaw dropping yard photo but at the closing Comments that the 23 years of literally sharing a tour bus, there was another model railroader there with him.
