This is a deal! Having the correct locomotive to pull this consist is the only deal killer to me...

Rory, that was my thought also. Beautiful cars and at a great price. I was really tempted. But no proper locomotive power for it? Maybe try a black GS3 or 4? Good luck trying to find one of those. And if you did find one, it would probably run several thousand. Maybe a cab forward, they're still available. Hmmm. But still around 3-5 thousand. Maybe a customized Mikado? Might work in a pinch. Hell, just use the UP Daylight heritage SD70 and call it an "excursion" train. Oh, sorry. That's right. We can't get that one either. Not trying to discourage anyone from buying it. If you like it, get it. It is a beautiful set and at a great price. I just have nothing to go with it.

Rory, AFAIK Marklin did not make a SP Pacific. However, Marklin did make a SP Mikado as part of their American regional sets. It consisted of a Mikado with tender, three freight cars, and a matching caboose. Marklin had these sets for various American road lines such as SP, UP, SF, BO, GN, MW, and others. Occassionally they pop up on Fleabay. I'm not sure of the accuracy of these Marklin Mikados because they all looked the same. Just painted differently for the various railroads.
The only issue was of course the giant fish hook couplers that Marklin uses. If you can find a SP Marklin on ePay, suggest you use the Zelatory conversion kit for tenders that Anthony sells at Monster to change the couplers. This might work for this set. Good luck.
EDIT F3's were first produced in 1945 so SP probably got them around that time or shortly after. Mark would probably know if the Sunset was still using heavyweights around that time. You might be able to call this a "transition period" if you use the F3's.

So I bought the set, and plan to pull it with my E8. As I understand it, SP used the "daylight" scheme on the Sunset Limited (so the F3 would not work). According to Wikipedia, it should really be pulled by a ALCO PA during 1949 (when it was diesel but still heavyweight), but what can you do?

Congratulations on this buy, and there is a weathered cab-forward on Ebay right now. May have pulled a consist like this?

But the cab forwards were largely used in Northern California, no?

Following up on this project, which has taken some twists and turns, and based on the 1949 SP schedule here (page 7) : streamlinermemories.info/SP/SP49-7SysTT.pdfI am thinking about adding a 10-1-2 Southern heavyweight to the consist to represent the through car to NYC on the Crescent. Thoughts? Any ideas for the T&P-MoPac car? Maybe a generic Pullman? Can't wait for the E7s, btw...
