I realize its just a few weeks until the release of the WP Mikado, but I just have to ask if any of the road numbers might be in the group: 318, 324, 334, 335 ?

I can honestly tell you that the AZL WP Mikado road numbers will start with a 3. Rob

I have bad news for you Mark. The only genuine USRA heavy Mikados that the WP had were 306-310. Although many of the others would fit the model, I have a feeling AZL might have done their home work and produced models in this number set. These are the same numbers Kato did with their N scale Mikados.

The numbers I listed were the Mikados that were described as typically used on the Exposition Flyer. I thought it would be neat to have a complate name train from AZL. I knew that 334 & 335 were too late to be USRA and the tender totally wrong. I just couldn't remember if the start of the USRA was 306 or 316. So, I guess it will be safe for me to number my "M" mikado as 318.
Regardless, technically, I model the wrong side of Winnemucca for the AZL model...but I still want one.

WP, that should be 311 and 313 if I can recall correct. Best, Hans

Hans, Thanks. Now I can do a bit of research as to how and where they were used. BTW: having been born on a Friday the 13th, I have a soft spot for "13".

In researching Hans' roadnumbers, I learned that WP had 5 USRA Light Mikados numbers 321-325 from 1919 to 1920 which were sold to Walbash and the numbers reused. Perhaps another modeling opportunity?

In “Western Pacific Steam Locomotives, Passenger Trains and Cars” by Guy L. Dunscomb, there are two photos of WP light Mikado #321. They show the engine in a USRA paint scheme with a large “U.S.” painted on the tender similar to this 2-10-2 : upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9d/USRA_Light_Santa_Fe.jpgI haven’t seen any other photos from the first 321-325 engines while on the WP. It is a possible repaint option for the light Mikado. Now for the heavy Mikados, I need to figure out how to make some Elasco feedwater heaters.

Thanks, I've got the book and I'll have to check it out when I get home. I also seem to remember a photo in the Hayes book of one with a large "W.P." painted on the tender. I'm actually surprised there are any photos of the light Mikados: my understanding is they were on the property for only about 9 months.
On my Marklin, I built the Elesco feedwater heater from a rod inside a somewhat shorter thin-walled tube, polish the ends, notch the bottom to fit the firebox and mounted it where Marklin put the bell. I was planning to add some plumbing using 10 mil Al wire, but can't find the spool. Close enough for the 3 ft rule. When I do the next Mikado, I'll have to snap some images.

I just realized that this discussion brings up another couple of questions: any plans or schedule for undecorated Mikados?

I was unaware that Miniatures by Eric carries a line of Z scale detail parts, including a feedwater heater. I ordered myself a few along with many other detail parts. Now I'm just waiting on AZL for the WP Mikes.

It would be interesting to get your opinion of the feedwater heater Eric is producing. From the images on the site I can't tell whether the detail is better than my tube on rod approach.

Mark, I got my detail parts in today. I'm going to use these feed water heaters on mine. They look pretty good to the naked eye, and have some rivet detail. The part is about 2.7 mm in diameter by 8 mm, and the curvature is about perfect for the light Mikado. Under micro photography some imperfections are evident. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. I'm sure most can be quickly fixed with some filing. Once I get all the tubing hooked up to them, it should look pretty good.
