Is it possible to use one or more z-scale track manufacturers constructed in a layout? Marklin connected to Micro-Trains Line track for example.

Yes. All manufacturers of Z scale track will connect and operate together. You might need to remove plastic joiners from roadbed track. You might also need to put something under non-roadbed track if you're connecting the two together.

He also says he uses a wood sublayment!

Yes you can mix, although you'll be spending a bit of time getting everything to mate up. Probably the biggest issue is the small shape and size differences of the rail cross sections that makes a rail joiner too tight or too loose when going between manufacturers. You need to use the loose joiner and crimp and solder. You'll have to make your own roadbed joiners. I didn't bother, just cut the manufacturers' joiner in half.
Regarding roadbed, the is a slight different between Rokuhan and MTL that can be shimmed with a couple of strips of index cards. Roadbeds are roughly 0.1" and cork sheeting that thickness can be used under non-roadbed track.
I'm no longer a big fan of mixing track. At one time, I wanted MTL for the prototypical U.S. ties and Rokuhan for their turnouts. But with Atlas in the picture I can get both the way I want them.
Hope this helps,
Mark

The DC Z Bend modules have a wide variety of track on them. Some have this brand others have that, Marklin, Peco, Micro Trains, Rokuhan, Atlas and Micro engineering code 55 hand laid rail and they all mate up to each other and run just fine. As Mark said you may have to loose joiners or crimp some a little tighter here and there but most all Z scale track will mate up.

If You wanna avoid issues, use only one kind of profile ; I tried (at the store) to connect Peco flex track with Märklin, no success. Rokuhan has the largest choice of sectional tracks (especially large radii, not available at other manufacturers) , so I built my whole layout with them ; only their flex track is rather ugly, I used it only in a tunnel for length compensation.

Thanks for the info. I have all Marklin and probably will stick with the same manufacturer. The frogs seem to be the rough spot for the lighter cars. But manageable.
