Tracks are important, but tracks alone do not create the illusion of a miniature world. It needs trees, forests, stones, hills, mountains, canyons, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, meadows, deserts and so much more. I intend to show here some nice examples of the experts like Dirk Kuhlmann, John Cubbin, Karl Sinn, just to name a few. But feel free to comment and add whenever you like. Follow me through the world in scale 1:220 - what a big small journey.............. Best, Sven

Have we gotten lost in the woods? Would be easy, wouldn't it, Mark, Like to join me for a little stroll? In order to brain-storm on which topic to start? How about WATER ? Best, Sven PS: Take a closer look. Are you sure about where the layout ends and the backdrop starts?

1) WATER Nothing, in my eyes, is more fascinating than the combination of water and railroad. In all variations. I will show you; - A little river - A medium-sized lake - A cozy bay - The open sea - An harbor (or two) - A water mill Did I miss something, Mark? Let's have fun! Best, Sven

Let's start with the first example; John Cubbin's " Stone Pond" module 1
Here we are inside a canyon. The railroad has to share the space with the little left-over of the river that carved out the canyon. The high walls of the canyon make up for a perfect natural backdrop. To the left of the module, a big rock tightens the space and forces the railroad to squeeze in. Please note, there is no sign of civilization beside the railroad track. Which makes it perfect for use with all different rolling stock you may want to display. Even a Cabforward fits nicely! Using Dirk Kuhlmann's black box approach, several of such modules can be connected and allow for trains passing by. Here the full length of this module 1 from left to the right. The second module will come next. Questions? Comments? Enjoy and stay safe! Sven, Dirk and Jürg

Water covers 70% of the Earth's surface, but I'm more of a hills and mountains man my myself, recognizing that there is almost always a trickle of water somewhere.

Module 1 connects through the blackbox to module 2 here; John Cubbin's module 2 is the "Snake River Bridge", quite famous for the filigrane bridge construction. Today's focus is however on the Snake River, which flows under the bridge (and some big rocks that Mark may want to qualify as hills? ). Thus, let's ignore the bridge for the moment (I know it is hard!! ), and follow the flow of the water, ....... ....., which is meandering through the full width of the river valley. Only the view from the helicopter perspective reveals how much water really is in the river bed; ....and how green the desert can be.......

Not a big difference between a lake and a bay, but may be the waves, the water and the vegetation! Karl Sinn in his layout "Niles Junction" put the San Francisco Bay in close vicinity to Niles in order to allow for a spectacular car float; ".... it never rains in Southern California....."
In November 2015 Karl Sinn proudly presented this module in Trainini. For those who my missed the article here the link: www.spur-z-atelier.de/data/uploads/pdfs/trainini_2015-11.pdfand a small map drawn by Dirk Kuhlmann for your orientation: The backdrop today is using pictures from the area around Niles. This picture captures nicely the atmosphere of doing railroading at the Bay coast...... ........, but also take a look at the trees! Oak trees, which are so typical for the Bay area....... .....with the birds eye.... ....and as pictures from Niles show, some palm trees are close to the station..... Zoom in; Remember & Relax! Sven

I love looking at all the landscape ideas and layouts and I'm always drawn to Scenery with water and people and boats and umbrellas. It's awesome.
